In a society where major forms of entertainment are lodged in cinema and theater, it’s easy to come across a few films or movies that have very similar concepts to the point of practically being the same. When there are well over a thousand movies in just the United States alone, it’s easy to comprehend why originality may be a challenge. There are three movies in particular that hold true to this statement and they are Pocahontas, James Cameron’s Avatar, and The Lion King. These movies hold very similar ideologies in regards to nature and greed. However, they tend to differ in their cinematographic approaches in revealing the underlying and, or, obvious, ideologies.…

Fiction films are often stigmatised by historians, as they distort the truth, causing problems when trying to use them as a source. Their wildly varying content matter, inaccuracies, and bias make them hard to use. Film does not simply suggest a worldview; it states, and we experience, its existence as truth, which is the fundamental power and danger it poses to the observer. One cannot deny, however, film’s phenomenal impact in the twentieth century, drastically changing the way we see the world and how we absorb information. In this way, film is best considered as one stage in the ongoing history of communications. As a historical medium, therefore, fiction film can be very valuable, as despite fictitious content, it still has the potential…
Over a period of time, specific audiences construct expectations of different types of media, related to either what they have been told, or perhaps what the media have exposed them to in the past. Indeed, it could be argued that the success of a film to a large degree, rests on whether or not such expectations are met, surpassed, else the audience successfully surprised. Certainly, such expectations have to be addressed by the film, if it is to be considered satisfying for the audience, and in this way, elements within the film, such as character representations, the narrative and cinematography are all important components which allow this to be achieved. Additionally, the social and political context in which the film is being viewed must be considered, as it is against this background that their expectations will have been formed.…
Telling a story, any story, is much more than just clever words. A good story typically requires very little effort, even if it is told poorly, to garner audiences. However, there are a few that may require additional components, such as creativity, vision and lots of imagination to make it interesting. Hollywood has mastered these elements… Imagery, artistry and resourcefulness are useful elements to spark interest, particularly when bringing a story to life. The documentary, Hollywood Styles as told in the perspective of Martin Scorsese, Sydney Pollack and other Hollywood moguls, highlights some of the various styles and techniques used in films to make a story, any story, compelling.…
Diversity plays an important part in traditional tales. I deeply understand that culture background can shape everything in traditional tales because multiculturalism has affected my thinking incessantly. I grew up in an era with the company of a unique mix of culture from China, Japan, and other western countries. Although Huck (2014) stress the reason of why do some people create traditional tales by saying “they created stories that helped explain the world” (p.103), the world can be explained differently via diverse culture.…

Through Haroun Khalifa’s adventure on the story moon of Kahani, Salman Rushdie discloses to readers the value of stories that are not even true. In Rushdie’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories, the author illustrates how powerful and versatile fictional stories are to real life. From the colorful Ocean of the Streams of Stories to the conflicting Lands of Gup and Chup, Rushdie creates a world within the novel that undoubtedly and continually portrays the point of made-up tales to Haroun and readers.…
The over-elaborate scale and ritualistic (sometimes anachronistic) motivations that tend to swamp this genre, and the characters contained therein, is reduced to reveal an effective and moving tale. In preferring to concentrate on a small number of emblematic themes, carried through strong performances, the film succeeds in resonating it’s meaning throughout the ages. A contemporary score and Eduardo Serra’s sublime photography further enhance the film’s vitality.…
The integration of folklore into a film can increase its truth-value. Michael Dylan Foster calls the integration, portrayal or parody of folklore and folklorist the folkloresque. The folkloresque is “the popular, vernacular, folk conception of folklore” (Foster 42). Foster further assert that “producers/consumers of popular culture interpret folklore and consciously draw on it for the sense of authenticity and authority it offers” (Foster 14). By depicting a legend, films and television shows become more…
In The Arabian Nights, a collection of Arabic folktales, Shahrazad uses the "˜Chinese box effect' to connect her stories to one another in order to continue telling the story to King Shahrayar. The tale of the Husband and the parrot has number of tales that are related to each other tales and to the original story in many complex ways. The subtales of The Story of the Fisherman and the Demon focus on a particular theme, trust, with relations between the characters and the analogy of the situations. A close reading of The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot reveals this particular tale told by King Yunan to the vizier is placed in the book particularly to increase the importance of trust. By linking the tragic death of King Yunan to his distrustful action, Shrazad ultimately tries to convince King Shahrayar to make the right decision: not to kill Sharazad herself and other women.…

In typical Qatari culture, there are many stories that include different mythical characters that were told by the older generations. Unfortunately, these stories have been forgotten and have disappeared from our lives, possibly forever. However, some stories that were adapted and mentioned in plays, movies, and television shows remain, and are probably the only stories today’s generation are familiar with.…
