Questions:
1. What do you learn from Ben Leach’s article about the issues and concerns regarding the building of wind farms? (8 marks)
2. Explain how the headline and picture are effective and how they link to the text. (8 marks)
3. Explain some of the thoughts and feelings Claire Francis has during the storm. (8 marks)
4. Compare the different ways in which language is used for effect in the two texts. Give some examples and analyse the effects. (16 marks)

Answers:
1. From Leach’s article we learn that wind farms could detract from ‘one in six beauty spots’ around the U.K. Leach backs up this claim in his first paragraph, saying that out of 89 protected sites, due to their beautiful landscape, 14 have sought or had approved planning permission for wind turbines.
We also learn that campaigners want clearer rules governing the approval of building wind turbines in order to protect ‘much-loved views’ from being ruined. He has also provided facts about Cornwall’s plans for wind turbines to support this concern, as they are planning to build 20 turbines ‘each 415 ft in height’, which is higher than St Paul’s Cathedral or Big Ben.
Leach has also included experts’ quotations and noted well-known organisation which are against the plan, such as the RSPB, Natural England and Friends of the Earth to support the concern that wildlife are in danger as a result of the wind turbines. He has included facts that ’16,000 starlings and dozens of golden plover’ might be killed each year.
Towards the end of his article we learn that people are desperate to save a ‘beautiful area of countryside’. We also learn that the British Wind Energy Association makes decisions about wind farms on a ‘case by case basis’ implying that they will consider the concerns and issues specific to each individual site. We also learn that Charles Anglin thinks ‘the biggest threat to...wildlife is catastrophic climate change.’, showing a different point of view about what is going to

There are an estimated 1354 billion barrels of oil left in earth, and 80 million barrels of oil are consumed per day¹. According to these statistics, if our society keeps consuming oil at this rate, earth's oil will only last 16,925 more days, or 46.5 years (as of Jan. 1 2010)¹. To combat this growing issue, many alternative sources of energy have been developed. Popular alternative energy sources include geothermal power, tidal power, hydroelectric power, solar power, nuclear power and wind power.     The first of these offshore American wind farms is located off the shore of Rhode Island and is proving to be a very valuable resource in the northeastern region. This wind farm, known as Block Island Wind Farm, has been producing at a high rate throughout the years. With an offshore wind average of 21.4 mph, it makes this an optimal place to have a wind farm. This wind farm has set records by producing 216,000 kilowatt hours of electricity in 24 hours. This can run around 7,300 average American homes daily (Ferber). This may not sound like a lot, but this only one wind farm. If more wind farms are set up in optimal positions they can provide more homes with power. Another example of this is the Danish island Samso. The homes on this island, of about 4,000 people, is run entirely on wind energy. With wind turbines set up all around the island Samso is able to get power to the all of its people (Papazu). This may be a very small scale operation, but with time and the development of technology it is clearly possible that a society can sustain itself on wind energy. Another study done over the year 2015 shows that wind energy produced 82,183 megawatts. This is enough to supply 24 million American homes with energy. This number has grown steadily since 2002, in the US. The amount of megawatts produced from wind energy was well under twenty thousand at that point. (Cardwell). This number has been increased almost ten times the original number in 2002.
