1. What were the main characteristics of the Indian civilizations of Mesoamerica? There were many characteristics of the Indian civilizations of Mesoamerica. One was that a lot of them were farmers. The Mayans and Aztecs of Mesoamerica had elaborate and complex systems of irrigation for their farming that they mastered. For Mesoamerican civilizations, an elite class ruled the society. The Mayans had an elite class that lived off of taxed peasants and the Aztecs had an established a hierarchical social order. A third main characteristic is that the peasants were taxed in these civilizations, which the elites lived off of. The Mesoamerican cultures also had very elaborate cities. For example, the Mayans had built the city of Tikal, which had a population of 20,000 people by A.D. 300. Tikal also had large stone temples. The Aztecs also had a big city, Teotihuacán. At about A.D. 500, Teotihuacán had about 100 large stone temples, a pyramid, 4,000 apartments, and a population of 100,000.

2. How were eastern woodland Indian societies organized and governed? Eastern Woodland societies were organized into clans. These clans were basically groups of families that could all trace their history back to the same ancestor. These clans were also a part in the way the society was governed. Clan elders and village chiefs did a lot of “police work” and more. They enforced laws, stopped fights, planned gatherings and ceremonies, and set the war policy. The idea of personal belongings was discouraged, for the Eastern Woodland peoples strongly believed in sharing with their neighbor. The men did a lot of the dirty work like hunting and fishing while the women tended the crops. These people developed a matrilineal system, where the ancestry was traced through the mothers, and intimacy between husband and wife didn’t happen.

    The Aztecs practiced what we now called democracy. The Aztecs had a supreme speaker (not an emperor) and divided their land into corporate clans, where each clan elected their administration officers and speakers.
