Apples ethics and social responsibility
In researching the Apple Company’s Social (Supplier) and ethical responsibilities I found that their initiatives are geared toward Empowering Workers, Labor & Human Rights, Health & Safety, Environment and Accountability. I think their approach is interesting but I feel that a large company like Apple can do way more for the local communities and country as a whole.
Apples stance on empowering their workers is a wonderful thing. I think more companies need to recognize that a happy workforce makes for an overall greater employee and customer experience. Apple Inc. employs staff all over the world and is committed to treating employees with respect and dignity. The company provides educational resources for all of their employees giving them the opportunity to earn an undergraduate degree. Apple has very high standards and expectations in the industry. They provide their employees with the appropriate tools necessary to meet the high bar set forth; communicate and maintain a safe and respectable workplace. Training on the Apples Code of Conduct is mandatory for all new and existing employees.
When it comes to Labor & Human Rights Apple is committed to ending excessive work hours, providing a foundation for ethical employment, preventing underage labor, stopping excessive recruitment fees and bonded labor and responsible sourcing of minerals. Apple only does business with companies that uphold the highest commitment to Human Rights.
Apple has very high standards in Health & Safety, Environment and Accountability. They believe that every worker has the right to a safe and healthy workplace. Improving health and safety is essential and all workers receive the appropriate education on the topic. All apple suppliers must work alongside of apple to

    The issues of social responsibility within a technology field usually fall within two areas: environmental and social, specifically labor. Somewhere there is a balance between product quotas and corporate social responsibility. Public opinion and clever communication often determines the outcome. In 2005 Apple began a supplier code, which stated Apple’s corporate stand on issues like employee workload, child labor, and proper wages. Since many of the local foreign companies who provide the manufacturing labor do not govern these issues, it becomes the responsibility of the company to provide the social restraints. Apple’s self-initiated audits report deficiencies in the supplier and demand reparations to those violations. If they are severe enough, Apple will terminate its involvement with the supplier. Apple announced that it fired one of its suppliers in the 2013 Supplier Responsibility Report when an audit revealed that the supplier had seventy-four underage worker violations (iClarified, 2013). Recently Apple increased its audits of its foreign manufacturing plants, since Apple products are mainly outsourced overseas (Torres, 2012). Now boasting a 92 percent compliance with a maximum sixty-hour workweek, Apple has bent to the public desire for a socially responsible company despite its intrinsic business production pressures (Apple, 2013).…

    Apple’s position on its ethical and social responsibility should be in direct correlation to Apple 's reputation as it is to the credibility of its products Apple has clearly cited on many occasions the belief that accountability is paramount for them as well as their suppliers.     Currently, Apple is one of the top companies in the world, releasing products such as the iPhone, iPad, and Macbook. According to Forbes (2013), Apple is the most valuable brand in the world for a third straight time, worth almost twice as much as any other brand in existence.     Apple is committed to ensuring that working conditions in Apple’s supply chain are safe, that workers are treated with respect and dignity, and that manufacturing processes are environmentally responsible. Apple’s suppliers (“Suppliers”) are obligated, in all of their activities, to operate in full compliance with the laws, rules, and regulations of the countries in which they operate. This Supplier Code of Conduct (“Code”) goes further, drawing upon internationally recognized standards, in order to advance social and environmental responsibility.
