Raw Materials (Coffee Beans): Coffee bean farming is not vertically integrated into Starbucks; the company purchases coffee beans from farmers. Starbucks choose to outsource farming due to the low potential hold-up problem. For its coffee, Starbucks uses only high-quality Arabica beans, instead of regular commodity and lower quality robusta beans. Since there are a lot of market participants trading Arabica beans (i.e. farmers & Arabica beans buyers), there is an established market price. Moreover, farm land has a low degree of asset specificity, and therefore farmers’ investments do not depend only on Starbucks as their buyer. Both of these allow both parties to contract without high transaction/bargaining cost.…

On September 5, 2007, Apple and Starbucks announced that they entered into an exclusive partnership to provide end users the opportunity to download music through iTunes. In order to access the service, a customer goes to a participating Starbucks location with their iPod® touch, iPhone™ or PC or Mac® running iTunes. The device automatically recognizes the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store using a high-speed Wi-Fi wireless network. There is no connection fee or hotspot login required. An icon pops up on their device through which the customer is connected to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. Customers can browse, search for and freely preview as many songs as they want. There is also a new “Now Playing” service that displays the name of the song playing in the Starbucks store at that moment. The end user can easily buy and download any songs or albums they want to purchase directly to their device.…

Core competencies lead to the development of core products. Core products are not directly sold to end users; rather, they are used to build a larger number of end-user products. For example, motors are a core product that can be used in wide array of end products. The business units of the corporation each tap into the relatively few core products to develop a larger number of end user products based on the core product technology.…

Business-to-Business (B2B) marketing is a discipline in its own right and one of the fastest developing fields of marketing. A business-to-business marketing organisation focuses on relationship building and communication through marketing activities. Nowadays, focus of marketing has shifted from tangible things to intangibles things like skills, information and knowledge. Business-to-business marketers are emphasising on ongoing relationships and connectivity with the clients but some gaps can still be found. B2B organisations are drifting away from their main theme, quality that can be achieved with the help of value creation and proposition.
