According to one of the pillars, proper behavior towards servants and employees, respect for mother and father, generosity to friends, companions, relations, Brahmans and ascetics, and not killing living beings. He emphasized compassion, nonviolence, and adherence to dharma; officials had to oversee the moral welfare of the realm and were required to rule humanely; dharma was a civic virtue that could unite diverse peoples of his empire. Some highlights of Ashoka’s administration were that he abolished the unnecessary slaughter of animals and banned sport hunting; he also allowed one day leave for prisoners to go outside.
