As British colonies were established in America during the 17th and 18th centuries, colonial assemblies were established in each of the 13 colonies. Originally, these colonial governments were little more than symbolic groups of colonists, who had limited authority to levy taxes to support colonial projects, issue colonial currency, and provide colonial defense. As colonists grew increasingly dissatisfied with the Royal government, these assemblies began petitioning the Crown for grievances. During the late 18th century, colonial assemblies captured a great deal of power from the Crown, as they seized all lawmaking authority within their respective territories.…

In order to make and establish the laws, the colonists needed to first form their own type of government because they could not rely on the British to make or even enforce their laws from such a far ways away. A change from what the colonists were used to was formed as a result of this. Instead of having to suffer under a malicious monarchy such as they did in England, the settlers wanted to establish a democracy in which wealthy and poor people alike had a say and choice of what to do. This idea of democracy is what is still present in America today and it is thriving unlike other countries whose government is completely controlled by one man or a selective group alone. It is thriving because everyone has a voice on the matters at hand and this voice is ultimately what leads to the formation of laws that benefit the majority of people in the country on a positive aspect. The first step the colonists took in order to achieve democracy, was to set up the House of Burgesses in 1619. This was established in Jamestown and was for a while the lone government.…

The New England colonies and the Southern colonies are slightly similar in some aspects, but drastically different in most. For example the new england colonies were strictly puritan and they did not tolerate any other religion but the southern colonies were not dominated by a single religion which gave way to more liberal attitudes and some religious freedom. The economy of New England was powered mostly the manufacturing in factories, whereas the Southern colonies’ economies were more agriculturally based. The social structures were different, because the New England colonies didn’t believe in slavery, so the social ladders were not the same. Religious tolerance was another major difference in these two regions. Overall the New England and Southern colonies are slightly similar, but their differences set them apart from each other.`…

John Smith was a soldier and a explorer and taught the settlers military discipline in order to get them to work. During the colonization of North America, the colonists created opportunities that not only benefited them, but these opportunities benefited the founding of the United States of America. The opportunities created ranged from free practice of religion by the Pilgrims to the chance of getting away from major debt within the lower class of England. The surreal amount of new resources the English had access to created opportunities in the production of goods and trade as well. Although these opportunities had some sort of gain for the Thirteen Colonies, the opportunity that created the largest benefit was the new government systems that originated in Virginia and Massachusetts. Every colony the English created had to acquiescence to a charter, a “written agreement between the colony and the king of England or Parliament.” (“The Colonial Experience”).…
