AOL Goes Far East

1. Was Mitsui the best partner for AOL to enter the Japanese market? If so, why? If not, who (or what kind of company) would make a better partner? Why?

Mitsiu being an established company in Japan, had the expertise and history to become a joint venture, but not with AOL. Even though the company is well established as an MNC in 60 countries and respected by Japanese corporations and consumers for their goods and services. (Kotabe) The companies' product portfolio did not possess the familiarity to deal with internet technology and ISP even though they had a technology department. They had the ambition to join in with AOL but did not have the structure to deal with a global internet giant. Jack Davies led expansions in Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Latin America and Sweden. All of these joint ventures, shared partnerships with media entertainment, telecommunication and multimedia companies, which increased AOL's net income. (Kotabe) Mr. Davies when identifying potential JV candidates should have sought a Japanese company with mutual interests as an internet service provider with internet capabilities to include technology. Instead of looking at Mitsiu‘s history Jack Davies should have researched NTT DoCoMo, which spun off of Nippon telephone and telegraph in 1992. The company was a better candidate to accommodate AOL. This would have saved AOL millions, instead of failing miserably with Mitsiu. NTT DoCoMo had the resources and customer base to help AOL Japan become a successful joint venture.

2. Do you think the current JV structure should continue into the foreseeable future? No, I do not think so, with the events that occurred and the blunders that happened. John Barber should have ensured that he had a more diversified employee base. Instead when Mitsiu president elects taking control of AOL Japan, Mr. Barber should have sent the president to the AOL in Fairfax, Virginia

Some firms, however, were unable to proceed as successfully as Comcast. While AT&T was one of the pre-1995 world’s largest telecomm companies, it underwent a major breakup to transform itself from a long-distance phone company to an integrated voice and data communications company. Spending over $100 billion to facilitate this evolution through acquisitions and upgrades, AT&T Broadband became the United States’ largest cable company. By 2000, however, in an industry rocked by multiple acquisitions, a long distance price war, slow adoption of new technologies, and dried…

The dominant value creating function is the main reason for the firm engagement in inorganic growth. Through this mode of growth, the firm improved the value of shareholders since the power and efficiency of the merged companies are better than the individual companies working separately. As a result, the value was captured in the anticipated synergies where the results of these mergers were evident based on the accelerated growth in revenues, profits, and assets. In addition, the mergers, especially the merger between world com and MCI, brought together two firms that have complementary strengths and assets (Hitt & Harrison, 2001). Through these mergers, the shareholders’ value was improved through operational cost reduction including, the reduction in reduced leased lined costs, and elimination of expensive terminal charges both locally and internationally. Also, the mergers eliminated duplication of activities and investments, adoption of best practices while sales and marketing forces have meshed thus making the established market channel to be better established. Moreover, the mergers and acquisitions helped the firm minimize the competition in the market, instantly add new brands to the firm’s product portfolio, instant access to fresh customer base and expansion to new geographical locations, gaining economies of scale over a reduced period of time, injection of new and diversified management skills and significant reduction of time to market thus giving the firm the competitive advantage (Gaughan, 2013). All these merger outcomes are value-adding since they enable merger process meet the characteristic of the value adding…

By much research, ATT has had opposition in the past which at times would end up in merger with another company. Many times small phone companies can not compete with ATT and thus kneel to them and soon become a part of the family of the biggest telecommunications giant this world has ever seen. We can see by the current merger of SBC and the Global name of ATT has given the public a misconception that ATT was bought out yet in all fairness it seems that ATT had the upper hand due to it’s strong name known all around the world. This was considered a weakness in my review. But this weakness can actually be strength due to the bonding and assets of two companies that really once was the same ATT we seen fifteen years ago when the Telecommunications act in 1996 prevented ATT from being a world conglomerate (Sirota 1999). Another weakness that can be said of ATT is their lack of Voice over Internet Protocol. Many companies have gone and used the internet to give people the chance it’s full potential and incur long distance charges. This has left ATT astounded due to the fact a missed opportunity went below the radar (Dinan 2008).…

This case profiles MCI’s merger debate between Verizon and Qwest in 2005. At this time, many other companies are merging due to the industry consolidation, therefore forcing MCI to keep up with its competition. MCI was acquired after a bidding war between WorldCom, British Telecom and GTE, with the winning bid being a $37 billion offer from WorldCom. MCI-WorldCom then acquired many other communication companies excluding Sprint due to a U.S. Justice Department ruling. WorldCom operated throughout its filing of bankruptcy, resulting with MCI being not only the surviving company, but one of the most extensive networks in the world. After posting losses in 2004, MCI must undergo a strategic process in which to choose the better bid, Verizon or Qwest, in order to stay on top of the industry.…

WorldCom, formerly known as the second largest long distance phone service, had taken its fall and officially took its final name on April 14, 2003. This Company’s mission statement was to “Create a competitive advantage for WorldCom and contribute significantly to WorldCom's business success by promoting business practices that provide greater opportunity for a diverse supplier base." Throughout WorldCom’s lively years, it had great growth through the buying out of other telecommunication companies, such as MCI Communications, Tier 1 ISP UUNET, and had a major part of the internet backbone. On November 10, 1997, this powerful company announced their 37 billion dollar merger, making it the largest in US history. WorldCom had almost become the nation’s top telecommunications provider if the Sprint merger had gone through. This merger couldn’t go through because of the concerns the US Department of Justice had about the possible future monopoly.…
