The air we breathe, the water we drink, the ground where we grow our food, and even the increasing noise we hear every day—all contribute to health problems and a lower quality of life In the following environmental pollution argument I will be discussing the effects of tobacco cigarettes as a whole as a result of human activities .The significance of tobacco cigarettes in relation to people and the environment, while identifying the origin or causes of the pollution from tobacco cigarettes. The possible effects and consequences of this pollution to human and ecosystem health reflecting on issues concerning the present and future quality of life ,family, community, region, the nation, and the world. The significant attitude or action used towards changing how others think, react, or take actions in solving, eliminating, or reducing the use of cigarettes. As well as preventative measures and attitude, mindset, values, and actions to change tobacco use. And last but not least how or what might I do to suggest, influence, or be a role model who inspires individuals, your community, or region to improve the existing conditions of the environment in relationship to tobacco cigarettes.
Environmental pollution is one of the biggest problems the world yet to date. It is an issue that troubles us economically and physically in our everyday lives. Yet, most people are aware and show little to no concern about this issue. One of top concerns of environmental pollution is tobacco cigarettes. The history and origin of tobacco cigarettes dates back to 1616 when the first crop of tobacco was grown for money in North America By the 1800’s many were chewing and hand-rolling cigarettes and on an average smoked about 40 cigarettes a year. "History Of Tobacco" (n.d.) But it wasn’t until the first commercial cigarette was created in 1865, that the lives of many past, present and future were forever changed. At the increasing usage of tobacco cigarettes fabrication went from 40 a year to a production of 300 billion a year as well as the development of several companies. In aid to lure individuals to their brand of cigarettes companies began adding filter to the cigarettes to promote the fact that it was safe and not harmful. This prompted the surgeon general of the U.S to write a report about the dangers of cigarette smoking and require that every cigarette pack contains a hazardous to health label.
Fast forward today tobacco cigarettes continue to be one of the leading concerns of pollution as well as human health concerns. According to "Center For Disease Control And Prevention" (2014), Worldwide, tobacco use causes more than 5 million deaths per year, and current trends show that tobacco use will cause more than 8 million deaths annually by 2030. Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including an estimated 42,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure. This is about one in five deaths annually, or 1,300 deaths every day. It is also capable of causing cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease and diabetes. Each day, more than 3,200 persons younger than 18 years of age smoke their first cigarette. An estimated 2,100 youth and young adults who have been occasional smokers become daily cigarette smokers. This astronomical number is amazing and yet it still continues to climb and will continue to do so if preventive measures are not implemented.
However there is still more to talk about in reference to the variety of effects of that cigarette smoke can have as a result of human activities .Besides air pollution the use of tobacco also destroys forest, kills marine creatures, starts brush fires and produces litter. Though thought to be non-harmful cigarette butts are one of the most dominating causes of pollution. The filers contain leach toxic chemicals--including arsenic, cadmium, lead, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-- that could pollute the environment and harm it ecosystem. They are mostly made of plastic and are only biodegradable under ideal conditions, making them a long lasting threat to the environment ("Cigarettes And The Environment", 2014) When discarded cigarette butts take between 18 months to 10 years to decompose leaving communities, oceans , and other areas occupied with a harmful substance. Together all these factors that I have named are a major concern because of the counteractive response that tobacco cigarettes have on the environment. If not maintained or if preventive measure are not implanted the quality of life for us as human will continue to stay the same. As a consequence the effects of tobacco cigarettes would have become greater and the efforts to diminish the effects on the environment will be insignificant.
