An Anyalsis of the poem 'The Fish' by Elizabeth Bishop
The poem 'The Fish' by Elizabeth Bishop is a narrative poem told in first person about the capture of a fish by an amateur fisher and the progression of the understanding for the beauty of nature.

As the poem progresses the speaker moves from a sympathetic pitiful view to a respected and admiring view of the fish. The internal confrontation of the speaker is aided with vivid imagery and similes. The speaker convinces the reader alternatively of both the fish's beauty and its repulsiveness. She describes the fish as old and battered, "Brown skin hung in strips like ancient wall paper", "was like wallpaper: shapes like full brown roses stained and lost through age." The fish's skin is twice compared with wallpaper, something dull and artificial. She seems to be displeased with her own simile, repeating it twice to show her displeasure of the fish. The images that the speaker first describes the fish with, are those that are on the outside, the fish's appearance. She then seems to try to delve inside the fish seeing past his appearance, "Underneath two or three rags of green weed", she describes "The coarse with flesh packed in like feathers". Even though she may not be describing a characteristic of the fish, she still uses 'feathers' to describe his flesh, to show the fishes beauty inside. The comparison latter in the poem "Like medals with their ribbons frayed and wavering" symbolizes the fish being a decorated war-hero, the use of wavering especially gives an image of courage and pride. The progression of the fish's similes again emphasizes the speaker's progression to understanding the fish's beauty. The first similes where that of wallpaper something artificial, then to feathers, something from an animal and finally the fish is compared to a war hero, something a human could only attain. In "The Blue Heron", the poet, Theodore Roberts, uses a variety of color to engage the audience in the vivid imagery he presents. He tries to create a happy scene in the mind's eye; one of health and untainted natural beauty. He describes the scene with "green lanced through/ With amber and gold and blue", describing the flora and bodies of water that fill the area. He also describes the "roses pinker than dawn", insinuating the rich floral beauty and abundance of nature that exists in the area. Then the poem takes on a more somber tone, with images of "grey ... embers of yesterday" and "grey feather." The toned down, dark colors have a negative effect on the feelings that the reader experiences, and that helps the poet get the sentiments that he means to across. This contrast of the bright colors against the darker colors also signifies how the blue heron is viewed by the poet. He seems to portray the bird as a two faced mystery, showing itself as a mindless creature that barely understands that which is around it, but with hidden grievances against the world. Images of the heron being "still as an image made/ Of mist and smoke" but with "eyes [that] are alive like gems" makes the audience hold a view of the heron as being an animal that holds a grudge against something.     A simile is used when they say “given broad strokes of murder by a pelican lumbering shoreward, then diving with a splash like a car wreck, rising cradling a fish in his bill, and so emerging triumphant”. Although there is only one simile in this poem I believe this symbolizes a lot in the poem and about life. This effectively says how the pelican was determined to get the fish as food for survival and how the fish was helpless as part of this feat. It’s kind of like a cycle of nature. It is like survival of the fittest. Everyone needs different things in order to survive.     The fish tank is a symbol of the ebb and flow between good and bad times. The fish’s existence which relies solely on the owner 's hand is predictable only by the constancy of the protagonists’ marriage.     In lines 22-23, the speaker gives a detailed view of how the fish is in a near death experience and is fighting for its life. A small use of figurative language is used to describe the view of the fish’s gills as frightening (24). This proves how scared the fish was getting as it was almost down to its last breath. The gills are revealed as “fresh and crisp with blood” to continue to reiterate that death is on the way through imagery (25-26). This shows how man’s power can either be used for the better or the worse in the world. At this point, readers can see how the environment depends on the actions of human beings. The speaker then starts to think about the interior of the fish; they speak about its “white flesh”, “bones”, “black and red entrails” and “pink swim-bladder”. As the speaker looks into the fish’s eyes (34-35), the speaker makes note of how “shallow” and “yellow” its orbital area looks. In lines 37-40, the description of the eyes is continued. At this moment, there is a showdown between the narrator and the fish. Their eyes do not leave each other and the speaker starts to reconsider its actions. It is safe to infer that the fish’s eyes read desperation as it was facing death and was in need of a miracle.
