Choosing a career is a choice that one should approach with a plethora of knowledge on all options, weighing the pros and cons of each career, and ultimately choosing what is the best long term option for him/herThis is somewhat awkward.. According to U.S. News author Tim Tyrell-Smith, there are key questions that one should ask oneself when making this choice: What are your natural talents?, What’s your work style?, Where do you like to work?, Do you enjoy social interactions?, How important is work-life balance?, How do you deal with stress?, and How much money do you desire to make? (Tyrell-Smith. 2010) One should also consider the educational training needed for a particular field. The final career choice and ultimate option should be one that may even include guidance from a career counselor or school advisor. In this report, the previous questions will be explored in order to choose between a career in Landscaping or Carpentry. In this formal report, a comparison will be made between 2 careers. The career choices are Landscaping and Carpentry. These two careers have similarities as well as differences.…

My first observation of this article was its candor. The quote, “we are who we recruit” really resonated with me because it actually reflects the theme of the case. The fact that SG Cowen only held on-campus recruiting programs at a handful of schools, its “core business schools” seemed to limit the quality of applicants because even though these were the best schools, the students might not have a high GPA or the best qualifications. Chip Rae, the head of recruiting for SG Cowen, has an outlook on recruiting that is best described by the aforementioned quote, because SG Cowen is recruiting not just for the present but for the long term.…

Most MBAs from the top-10 or even the top-25 ranked institutes find some job and hence they are technically “placed” but many of them are forced to take up jobs that could be easily managed by someone with a basic graduation degree itself. There are legions of MBAs in the field sales force of pharmaceutical or FMCG* companies, on the shop floor of retail outlets, and in different types of BPOs and KPOs. In 2000, there were about 600 colleges in India offering about 70,000 MBA seats. By the end of 2009, the number had increased to 1,400 colleges offering about 120,000 MBA seats! And this is increasing.…
