Antonia Sheryl Sandberg Analysis
Great topic Antonia! I agree with Sheryl Sandberg’s message about the importance of maintaining a fair workplace. The unfortunate reality about our society, is that we still have a foundation that is archaic and closed minded. It is obvious that Sheryl prepared and created an audience analysis that allow her to determine what the audience knows and should know about the topic (Albert, Nakayama, Martin 302). In order to create change in society, we must learn to have an open dialogue with an emphasis on understanding the point of views of others. Furthermore, not allow ourselves to take criticism personally, but rather a macro point of view to see the bigger picture.

One topic that I found to be very interesting was in regards to compensation. Dean McTiernan discussed the issue of wage inequality, stating that statistically women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. Chapter 9 mentions federal laws related to human resources management, in which one law specifically relates to this issue. In 1963, the Equal Pay Act was enacted that required men and women to be paid the same for equal work, so this law must not be that effective if women are making 77 cents per dollar a man makes. Another topic in regards to compensation is about salary negotiations. Erin McCarthy, an alumna of RWU, discussed the importance of salary negotiations, as employers will typically offer a potential employee a lower salary. Women are typically less vocal and less confrontational, so potential women employees may fear to negotiate their salary with their employer. This topic relates to chapter 9 because there is an entire section on compensation.…

This semester, the readings were a bit challenging, but overall I enjoyed the readings. It has always been very difficult for me to understand Donna Haraway, but by discussing her in class and giving examples, I was able to have a better understanding of her topics. Throughout her work Modest_Witness@Second_Millennium. FemaleMan©_Meets_OncoMouse: Feminism and Technoscience, Haraway explains that cyborgs are constructed as the postmodern icon in today’s society, because of science. Haraway explains that, “Biology was interesting not because it transcended historical practice in some positivist epistemological liftoff from Earth but because natural science was part of the lively action on the ground” (Haraway 1997, 104). Biology not only determines…

Stereotyping and acceptance to diversity are some of the characteristics that have been revealed by the behavior of Sheryl Sandburg. Men are known to have the character of managing big businesses that are successful. However, women too have stepped up through the act of society to embrace diversity. The women have in the past been discriminated against taking some of the leadership positions as well as being given the responsibility to manage a big business. The success of Sheryl has revealed that women have equal abilities as men and they too can be successful just like the men of the opposite gender (Ivancevich, 2007).…

    Supervision Today

Describe how workforce diversity has affected supervisors ? Employees don’t set aside their cultural values and lifestyle preferences when they come to work. Supervisors must remake organizations to accommodate these different lifestyles, family needs, and work styles. They must be flexible enough in their supervisory style to seek the involvement of all employees and be aware of the fact that all employees are differently motivated in terms of what they want and need from work. Diversity of the employee pool requires a broad range of new policies and practices. Work schedules will need to be more flexible to accommodate single parents, working parents, and couples maintaining commuter relationships living in different locations. Companies will need to explore the possibilities of providing child care and elder care so that the employees may be better able to give full attention to their work. Benefits program may need to be redesigned and individualized to reflect more varied needs. Career –planning programs may need to be reassessed to deal with employees who are less willing to relocate for broadened job experience and promotions. Employees will need training to learn to understand to appreciate people who are different from themselves. Supervisors will need to rethink their motivation techniques to respond to a widening range of employee needs. Employees are recognizing that work is squeezing out their personal lives and they are not happy about it.…

gender. This plays into the idea that there is a big gender divide based on stereotyping within the workplace between men and women. An example of this would mean taking sick leave and it being ok however when women take maternity leave there is a stigma behind it. Catalyst did a peace of research on who makes more money within the workplace after analysing their research they found out that ‘’ men still make more money than women and men (particularly white men) are over-represented in top leadership positions’’ (Catalyst, 2004)…

    Glass Ceiling Is a Myth

Many a time, the most difficult of barriers that suppresses us, are the ones that we create ourselves. One of the most perpetuated lies propagated by contemporary feminist groups in the world today is the existence of a phenomenon called the “Glass Ceiling” (the GC). The essence of this theory is that of an apparent existence of an imaginary suppressing factor at a high hierarchical level prohibiting the upward rise of women along the scalar chain. Supporters of this theory, attribute its existence to the rising and chronic structural discrimination against women as a gender in favour of men. More often than not, this theory is used as an excuse used by women’s own failings in today’s corporate sector. Ghinny Rometti (CEO, IBM) and Ursula Burns (CEO and Chairman, Xerox) are two of the many women who have been shattering this ‘glass’ in the face of the contemporary world today.…
