Antigone Letter To Birmingham Jail Analysis
Sophocles’ age old play Antigone is about a young girl who fights King Creon’s unjust law for the burial of her brother who was deemed a traitor to their town. With the act of civil disobedience both Antigone and Creon strive for their own justice but in the end meet their fate. A more modern way of civil disobedience would be the strategy that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. used. The steps a person can use to change a law they find unjust are explained in his essay “The Power of Non-Violence” and “The Letter to Birmingham Jail”. Martin Luther King’s theory has four major steps: first finding an injustice exists, negotiation, self-purification and direct action. Although Antigone’s actions against Creon do not completely conform to Marin Luther

    On April 3rd, 1963, the Birmingham campaign began and people were protesting against racism and injustice. The non-violent campaign was coordinated by King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. However, King was roughly arrested with other main leaders of the campaign on April 12th for disobeying the rules of “no parading, demonstrating, boycotting, trespassing and picketing”. While jailed, King read a letter (“A call for unity”) written by eight white Alabama clergymen against King and his methods from the newspaper. In the letter, the clergymen stated that the campaign were "directed and led in part by outsiders," urging activists to use the courts if rights were being denied rather than to protest. The letter provoked King and “the Letter from Birmingham jail” was a written response to the white clergy men and to defend the strategy of non-violent protesting. Throughout the letter, King used many stylistic writing elements and effective emotional appealing to make people want to join his case.…

    The early 1960s was an era of change in the United States. African-Americans led a campaign, known as the civil rights movement, to gain the freedoms and rights they had been unjustly denied. One of the leaders of the movement was Martin Luther King Jr., a Georgian minister and president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He traveled the nation to help lead nonviolent protests and fight discrimination. King's toughest challenge came in Birmingham, Alabama, where the movement was forcefully put down by the local government. In April 1963, King was arrested in Birmingham for leading the protests.     King, however, didn’t advocate citizens transcending the law, but rather, Dr. King believed that in order to remedy injustice in society, people must openly break the unjust law and accept punishment in showing “highest respect for the law”(King p.23). In a rather interesting yet extreme example, King relates civil disobedience to the Holocaust: “It was ‘illegal’ to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler’s Germany.     The two authors saw a need for civil disobedience. In “Antigone” the protagonist decided that despite what the king had said she was going to follow through with her religious and traditional burial rights for her brother. “No, he has no right to keep me from my own.” (Sophocles p. 13) Her brother was deemed a traitor by the king and he forbade anyone to ‘honor’ him by burying or even mourning his death. However, Antigone loved her brother and did not want to dishonor her gods by leaving his body out in the open for the wild animals to pick over and devour.
