Antacids Lab
Introduction The purpose of this lab was to test different antacids, to find out which would be the most effective to take. Stomach acid problems come from a overproduction, and build up of gastric acid (HCl). In order to determine which antacid is the more effective, four different brands of antacids were chosen, and tested. The purpose of an antacid is to balance out the pH inside a person's stomach. PH is the measurement of molar concentration of hydrogen ions that are present in the solution (N. Tro, 733-735). If this experiment were to be repeated, it would be to show which antacid would be more effective to buy as a consumer. In this experiment an antacid is dissolved in HCl, and then titrated NaOH is added into the antacid solution until the color turned from clear to a pink. The amount of mL of NaOH needed to turn the solution pink times the total molarity of NaOH will gives the moles of HCl that were neutralized.

Once calculated the moles of NaOH will be left. Each beaker in the experiment had a constant of 0.15 moles of HCl. The results concluded that Medi-First, active ingredient Calcium Carbonate, had neutralized the most acid in the HCl out of any other solution tested, as shown in Moles neutralized on the bar graph. It is important to note that these findings had a multitude of human errors, many of which needed to be corrected just so that the findings made any sense at all. If this was a real peer reviewed article scientist would have retested, and noticed many inconsistencies in the data, like the amount of mg in each dosage, which would have resulted in the findings to have been thrown out, and ruled

    The calcium dissolved really quickly and there were bubbles and foams formed. We then heated the beaker with a hot plate for 2 to 3 minutes, equally distributed the supernatant solution into two test tubes, but avoid pouring the solid.     The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the composition of a simulated pharmaceutical preparation Panacetin, a proposed type of pain-killer. Panacetin is typically made up of sucrose, aspirin, and acetaminophen, but the third component in this experiment is unknown. The unknown component is suspected to be a chemical relative of acetaminophen, either acetanilide or phenacetin. Using techniques such as extraction, evaporation, and filtration, the three components will be isolated based on their solubilities and acid-base properties. The percent composition of Panacetin will also be deduced based on the masses of the three dried components; this is done to verify the composition attained is consistent with those listed on the preparations label. As a result of this investigation, my teammates and I allowed the Panacetin to undergo gravity filtration and separation techniques in order to identify whether there are any discrepancies in the components of the Panacetin. Furthermore, recrystallization and purification methods were used to determine if the unknown substance were similar in properties to either of the suspected unknown substances by comparing factors such as melting points to the chemical properties of phenactin and acetanilide. The results were as expected, based on the molecular weights and ratios of each separated chemicals, as well as the boiling point of the unknown it was determined that these ranges were close enough to indicate that the label is reasonably accurate in its composition. To add on however the identity of the unknown component differed from what the label indicated. In the end, the percentage composition attained based on our observations and yield confirmed that indeed the chemical composition of Panacetin were as indicated on the preparations label. The identity of the unknown component however suggested that the preparation did not contain acetaminophen as indicated, but instead was consistent with the chemical properties…

    Experiment and Observations: As I performed the lab, I had to retrieve all my equipment’s from my labpaq. As I started to setup, I had to weigh out 1.0 gram of CaCl2*2H2O on the digital scale. After it was weighed, it was added to the 100 mL beaker and 25 mL of distilled was added and stirred. Next, I had to figure out the amount of the second reactant, so that it can be added to the solution. I had to perform stoichiometry to figure out the amount of Na2CO3 is needed to make a precipitate of calcium carbonate. After the calculations, I arrived at .72 grams of Na2CO3 and rounded to the nearest tenth to mix with 25 mL of distilled water. After both of the reactants were mixed separately with distilled water, they both were clear color. As soon as you added the solution of Na2CO3 to CaCl2*2H2O the color of solution changed to a cloud white color. When both solutions are mixed, the paper filter that was provided with the lab must be weighed and recorded.     Even when there was pink color, it often lasted only for a few short seconds until it was swirled away. The actual point of neutralization was a drop before the solution turned pink, but the results from one drop after was close enough. The volume of NaOH that was put into the vinegar was 25.50-mL. The amount of NaOH one drop before that would have been ideal but that did not have a large affect on the data. For this lab, two trials were performed to decide if mistakes were made in the first trial. The completion of two trials completed to help rule out any obvious experimental errors. If mistakes were made in the single trial, the mistakes were not as easily picked up on. I believe the results were generally accurate, although experimental error could have been a factor by inaccurate measurement readings, as well as inaccurate judging of when the pink color was what it was suppose to be. In trial 2 of the experiment, the volume of NaOH that was put into the vinegar was 25.45-mL. The average of the volume in liters was 0.02498-mL. The volume of NaOH in trial #1: 25.50-mL, and trial #2: 25.45-mL at a concentration of 0.1817M. It seemed accurate that the mass of the acetic acid in the vinegar was .2726g. The comparison between those two trials is understandable because there was much more NaOH then vinegar.…
