This report examines options available to launch a campus-wide Styrofoam recycling program at UBC. A pilot project on Styrofoam (a.k.a. expanded polystyrene foam) recycling has been running at the Brain Research Lab (BRC) located in the UBC Hospital. The pilot program has lasted for four months in nine of their labs. This pilot program uses services provided by a recycling material transporting company named Pacific Mobile Depots (PMD) to transport the
Styrofoam to a recycling plant by the name of AquaPak situated in Surrey, BC. As part of the
UBC Waste Management target of 55% per capita waste reduction for 2015, UBC is in need of a campus-wide Styrofoam recycling program to completely remove Styrofoam from going to landfills. The goal of this report is to closely examine options available for initiating and continuing a Styrofoam recycling program throughout the whole campus. The scope of this report extends only to the logistics of the recycling program, which consists of three main categories: the Recyclable Materials, Collection and Storage, and Pick-up and Drop-off of
Styrofoam. A sister report for this project is being written by another group, to analyze the recycling process itself.
Each section was evaluated using a triple-bottom-line analysis to recommend the best available solutions for each category. Research on all options was limited to available resources around campus and surrounding cities. The report‟s economic analysis is limited

DISPOSE of waste only if there is no viable alternative.It’s interesting to note that the last option should always be disposal and that there are many options available to us all to avoid that option and minimize waste.A Macville Success StoryRecently Macville conducted an audit of our resource usage and uncovered some home truths that were less than satisfactory. So we decided to make a change for the better and set ourselves some challenges to turn things around. One area that we focused on was our need to print, and we wanted to reduce this to save on paper, toner and servicing of the printers and copiers. We set the challenge to reduce our printing by 20% over a 2 month period. This was no easy feat, and in order to achieve this, we had to re-think the way we did business.With new procedures in place at the end of the first two months all costs were down. Our monthly paper consumption went from 599 reams to 479, reducing costs by $477.60. Toner costs dropped from $686 to 548.80 and cost of…

    According to “The Hidden Life of Garbage,” Heather Rogers states, “Today’s garbage graveyards are sequestered, guarded, and veiled.(178)”Rogers claims that the Waste Management Inc. operates its Geological Reclamation Operations and Waste systems (GROW) landfill on a historical river valley in Pennsylvania in which Washington had crossed the Delaware river. At the landfill site, Rogers’ states, “the logic of our society’s unrestrained consuming and wasting quickly unravels. (178)” In addition, Rogers explains “the aptly named GROWS landfill is part of Waste Management Inc’s (WMI) 6000-acre garbage treatment complex, which includes a second landfill, an incinerator, and a state- mandated leaf composting lot.(178)” Perhaps the landfill GROWS is aptly named due to the fact that the landfills have become increasingly larger. Moreover, Rogers stressed that although landfill regulations make them less dangerous, these answers will only be short-term solutions. Altogether Rogers attitude of the situation is that these landfill projects are being kept away from the public eye for a reason, which is to keep us from asking questions. In short, Rogers concludes her article by asking the repressed question, “what if we didn’t have so much trash to get rid of?” We generate a large amount of garbage ourselves, everywhere we go. At my grocery store, trash is being generating by the lack of a proper recycling program, untouched, edible food going to waste, and certain materials not being reused.…

By each patient have a reusable pitcher, we would use less Styrofoam We could even use pitchers that could be washed and sanitized by the kitchen staff so that would reduce greatly the amount of garbage that is going to our landfills. We would need to find out if the added energy cost of washing and sanitizing the pitchers and cups would be more beneficial for our community but if it is, it would be a great way to limit the amount of non recyclables we are putting in our community…
