Annoying Shoppers

Grocery shopping can be a very interesting experience. It seems like nothing more than a quick and easy chore at first. You go in, throw whatever you want into your cart, pay and then get out. Its almost relaxing, that is if the grocery store is completely empty. Unfortunately, there are always those other shoppers. The ones who think they own the place or something. They’re in just about every grocery store in America. You know who I’m talking about, that one parent- usually a mom- with a kid who just so happens to be screaming bloody murder. Also, everyone knows a bad cart driver when they see one, not to mention the label readers. And finally, probably the worst of them all, the Couponers. If you’re like me and you like to get your grocery shopping done as fast and productive as possible, these four shoppers are your worst enemies. Imagine yourself going to the grocery store. You drive into the parking lot, circle around for a minute or so just to find that perfect spot as close to the front door as possible. You gather the things you need: grocery list, phone, money, credit cards etc, and exit your car. As you walk by the automatic doors to go get a cart, the doors open and that’s when you hear it. That ear piercing, glass breaking, nails-on-a-chalkboard howl that comes from a small child no taller than your knee. As the screaming stops- only for an instant as the heathen catches its breath- and starts back up again, you find yourself blankly staring at the mother of this child as you pass by each other. You can’t help but think, “can you please take some control of your kid? This is a public place not your home!” but decide its better to just keep walking. Until you realize that you have completely forgotten what you were shopping for thanks to that bellowing kid. Good thing you brought a list right? The doors close behind you and the screaming fades. You have but a moment of

Traditional grocery stores have fallen by the wayside as supercenters and specialty food stores grow. They are increasingly looking for ways to differentiate themselves from the rest of the competition. Oftentimes, the supercenters are able to offer lower prices on food while offering a sizeable selection of other goods that food-only grocery stores find it hard to compete with. Some of these changes have come by mergers and the ability to purchase more for less and changing their appeal in the market. These stores have implemented new technologies such as self-checkouts and biometric technology that allows people to pay at the checkout with a scan of their finger to sway the consumer with convenience. Grocery stores are also differentiating themselves by touting their store brands, as premium goods as opposed to the well know value brands. They are changing their layouts and up scaling their stores to meet customers demands for a reason to enter their retail dwellings. Some groceries are offering even more convenience with the addition of specialty offerings such as Starbucks and fast food restaurants.…

My wife loves to go Black Friday shopping. I decided to venture out with her as I was curious about the environment. I figured it would be a great observation point as it is intense and very busy. We left our home at 6:30pm and arrived at Walmart at 7:00pm on Thanksgiving night. The parking lot was completely full and people were searching for carts in between cars. I immediately knew this was going to be a long night. As we entered the front door, we were already stopped by the masses of people. There were lines curving in every direction and people seemed to have already lost their patience. There was a strong body odor that we noticed from the multitudes of people crammed together and the vibe was they were out for blood. It started to become very comical for me.…

A grocery store is probably not the first place most people associate with entertaining stories, but in my family, there have been quite a few tales that revolve around our local Kroger. For instance, hearing my sister, Mary Jean, recount the loss of her beloved parking space when Kroger built their gas station has been the cause of much hilarity. Approximately two years ago, Mary Jean and I went to Kroger for just a few items, and found the place teeming with other shoppers. The holidays were approaching, so the lines were four or five shoppers long and more than a few of them had carts that were almost overflowing. The overhead lights were noticeably bright, compared to the overcast sky outside, and all…

As a mother I went to pick up my child from Preschool setting. Some parents and I were waiting in school yard. Children were coming and were greeted by their parents. The preschool assistant, not a first time, loudly called a father of a boy and referred to him that his child is horribly behaved, he ignored her and that he is spiteful. The father began to shout at his son, he aggressively pulled his son towards him and shook him and left the premises. As a mother I felt uneasy, frightened, scared, confused. The preschool assistant evoked negative polemics. Something’s not right. What?…
