Annotated Biblography on Pride and Prejudice
Austen, Jane. Pride and Prejudice. Bantam Books, New York, 1813-1981.
Pride and prejudice is romantic novel and was written during a time of war in Britain where Austen grew up. This book is very interesting and it might rise a lot of question in it’s readers mind. This book is also the book I‘m doing my research on and though it has little comparison to history but it reflects a lot of values. The book talks mostly about marriage and reflects social issues. This novel shows us that love can overwhelm us and love is also one of the most powerful human emotions.

This Article talks about morality and marriage in Pride and Prejudice money was one of the most connected themes and so was marriage. When this novel was written women did not work and so it was not unusual for a woman to be married to a man of fortune. However, this article talks about the moral values that the character Elizabeth had and her love for the other character Mr. Darcy was not solely based on his richness but on love.

Nicholas-Casebolt Ann, Josefina Figueira-McDonough, and F. Ellen Netting. “Change Strategies For Integrating Women’s Knowledge Into Social Work Curricula.” Journal of Social Work Education 36.1, 2000. Academic OneFile. Gale. MORENet, Columbia College. September 11,2009.

In this article a change to gender-integration is argued. The article is about incorporating women in social work. The article also gives views on why gender should be included in schools curriculum. This is important because just like in Pride and Prejudice individuals still have the concept that women should not work or that women should only do house chores. This is still a major factor in today’s world as women are seen as the weaker class.

Halliday, E.M “Narrative Perspective in Pride and Prejudice.” Nineteenth-Century Fiction. Volume 13, Number 7, Mar. 1959, p 356-358. JSTOR. Columbia College of Missouri. September 11, 2009.

This articles gives an analyses of the book enabling readers to have a better understanding of the book. The characters are developed and have moral fiber. It gives a good range of techniques and consistency throughout the story. Austen uses her abilities to show economics on marriage, because it was hard to find a good man of wealth in 1813, women were pitted against each other as foes and competition. This is very helpful to my paper because it also help me to better understand the concept of Austen’s writing.

Chandler, Alice. “A Pair of Eyes, Jane Austen’s Treatment of Sex,” Studies in the Novel 7, Number 1, Spring 1975, 94-95. Quoted as “Sexual Attraction” in Harold Bloom. Bloom’s Literary Reference Online. Web. September 11, 2009.

This analysis describes the sexual themes in Pride and Prejudice .There are images of the actors which place sexuality and passion on the story. It is obvious that the men falls for the women sexuality and it is important for the women to be submissive to the men. Cultural beliefs is a key role, this is a powerful story as it depicts gender, intimacy and the sense of equality would come from pleasures and self discovery. These traits are still present today in men and women.

Drew, Philip. A Significant Incident in “Pride and Prejudice” Nineteenth-Century Fiction. Volume 13, Number 4, March 1959, p 356-358. JSTOR. Columbia College of Missouri. September 11, 2009.

This article tells us how people in higher class are viewed as being perfect even when they have faults, Mr. Darcy is seen as the man without flaw. In the beginning of the story Mr. Darcy was very arrogant but as the story continues this is contradicted as Mr. Darcy became welcoming to the Bennet’s family. At the End of the story he is seen to be the perfect husband by Elizabeth even though he pretended to reject her at first. D. J. Dooley claims that it is this “ inflamed” that blinds Elizabeth to Darcy’s interest. This leads to the conclusion that love is blind and we sometimes do things because of love, money or power

Jane Austen’s best selling novel, Pride and Prejudice, was written between 1796 and 1797 and is set in the nineteenth century. To a reader, the title ‘Pride and Prejudice’ may give the impression that the novel is just about pride and prejudice, but in fact, the novel is about much more. It’s about matters of upbringing, marriage, moral rightness and love. Austen’s work mainly concentrates on the aspects of life relevant to that time period, for example; marriage, social class, this is portrayed through irony and the ironic views of the author. The novel is narrated through free indirect discourse, this gives a reader a more in-depth explanation and better description of what is happening. ‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man of possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife’, the first line in the novel is ironic because it means the opposite of what it actually says. It sets the novel in motion and briskly introduces the arrival of Mr. Bingley to Netherfield. Austen cleverly uses this linguistic technique throughout the novel which creates an interesting yet imaginative storyline.…

It can be acknowledged that the basis of ‘Pride and Prejudice’s story reflects on the prejudices and ill-judgements made by members of the public; regardless of their social disposition, in a somewhat light hearted fashion, whilst ‘Persuasion’ focuses more darkly and intensely on the consequence of such ignorant opinions and judgements cast without conclusive reason. Similarities between the two books in relation to plot, character and theme are evident. Both novels analyse a range of hurtful truths, common beliefs and stereotypes that are universal, with ‘Persuasion’, perhaps more seriously, detailing the consequences of…

One of the central themes in Jane Austen’s nineteenth-century novel Pride and Prejudice is the roles of passion and reasoning in justifying a successful marriage. The characters’ differing viewpoints on passion and reason in marriage reflect the contrasts between society’s views on marriage and Austen’s. Society in general sees marriage as an act that should be justified by logic rather than affection. Austen, however, sees passion as integral to the health of a relationship as well. The five marriages in the novel-Charlotte Lucas and Mr. Collins, Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, Lydia Bennet and George Wickham, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, and Jane Bennet and Mr. Bingley-. These differences and similarities between the characters’ relationships serve to indicate Austen’s own opinions on what should justify a marriage. In Pride and Prejudice, the Bennets’ and Collinses’ marriages reflect Austen’s belief that marriage is a union that should be justified by both passion and logic.…

Each individual in this world surely have a dream to get married once they grow up, especially with the one they love. Even though today’s society accepts unmarried relationship where couples live together and have babies out of wedlock, in the end marriage is what they hope for as a symbol of their relationship. Clearly, marriage is a must in human’s life. This necessity influences humans to create stories that end with marriage and live happily ever after. Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen, is also one of those stories that fulfils this criterion. In this novel, Jane Austen described various marriages which differ from each other. Instead of love, there are marriages that are based on appearances and wealth, full of hypocrisy. At first glance, readers might not be able to recognize what Jane Austen’s messages from this diverse marriage assortment. However with deep analysis to the entailment issue, Jane Austen’s bibliography and Elizabeth Bennet’s psychological state, there is some evidence that Jane Austen was actually criticizing the manner in which marriages took place during her time that was mainly based on one’s wealth. A conventionally romantic novel usually focuses on the relationship between a physically attractive man and woman. The hero and heroine usually meet early in the story and fall in love at first sight. The two lovers may, more often than not, have to overcome obstacles in order to be together, but in the end, it seems that love conquers all. Pride and Prejudice does fall into this 'romance' category; it's often considered the most romantic novel of all time. But there are certainly elements of this novel that drive completely against the cliches of a conventional romance novel, and this essay will attempt to pinpoint those 'elements', and argue whether or not Pride and Prejudice follows the conventions of a romantic novel.…

Although love is considered significant in the world we live in now, it was not the case in the 18th century- Austen’s time. As time progressed, so did education, fashion styles, medical practises and most importantly social constructs and values. Love and marriage in Austen’s century, though it had some similarities, it was considerably different. Pride and Prejudice, a romance novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813 depicts the manner of marriage and love in the Regency era. It is a story of transformation, in which the protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet and her counterpart change to believe that love does transcend all things. The novel delves into the passion and excitement of love, but also the detachment that exists between loveless couples.…

“Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen, was written in 1797, when women were still dependent on men for their livelihood and marriage was a tool for women of the time to get settled in comfortable households. During the turn of 19th century in England, balls were one of the places to socialise, in other words, an opportunity for most young women to look for suitable husbands. Many of the Jane Austen novels centre on the theme of love and marriage, and it can be said that it presents to us the social history of England. Raymond Williams said, “Austen’s novels provide an accurate record of that moment in English history in which bourgeois society most evidently interlocked with an agrarian capitalism.” Austen’s Emma is a case in point in which the lead heroine is a match maker and though she herself vows not to marry but eventually falls in love with George Knightley who is the owner of an estate. Similarly, in other Austen novels, the story revolves around men and women interacting and socialising, and leads to an end where the heroine is happily married. Pride and prejudice is not free from such a theme, while marriage is a big concern, we also see development of love and the growth of relationships especially between Jane and Bingley, Elizabeth and Darcy.…
