Amendment for your topic (from the Bill of Rights)

One Multi-Media Resource (videos, slideshows, audio files, infographics)
Citation :Graphic : http://www.nancho.net/corperson/ THE SCOURGE OF DEMOCRACIDE How Popular Rule is Suffocated by Corporate Personhood

What information from this source seems the most important? Note key points mentioned in the source. Perhaps the most stunning weapon corporations use to dominate our world is the offensive shield of personhood that they bought from a bankrupt Supreme Court a century ago.
The Supremes of that dark day unexplainedly pronounced that corporations were persons and thus entitled to the same Constitutional rights and protections as living, breathing people

How does this source support your topic? It supports my topic because it shows someone with power trying to take the freedom of speech away from these people and they don’t get to voice there opinion.

What information from this source would be most useful to include in your informative/explanatory article? Campaign finance reform is one tortuous path to regaining popular control, but revoking corporations' personhood and their First Amendment "rights" is a much surer way to evict these anti-democratic bodies from our politics and halls of governance for once and for all.

Debates about the Citizens United case have been ripe throughout the entire country. In the case, the majority of the Supreme Court ruled that company broadcasts could not be limited. In addition, they ruled that there was no cap on company funding on candidates, but that there had to be a middleman of a superpac. Setting dangerous future implications, this decisions greatly undermines the future democracy of the country through condoning skewed political power based on wealth and by giving first amendment right to a company (Citizens 1).…

In 2010, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled on the Federal Elections Commission v. Citizens United, a case that will have drastic effects on our political system. Large corporations and labor unions will now have unprecedented influence over America’s national, state, and local elections. If Congress does not overturn the Supreme Court ruling on Citizens United then, as a result, the decision has the potential to lead to political corruption, the increase of voter apathy, and the drowning out of third party ideas. Soon our country’s political system will no longer work for the good of its citizens, but rather be beholden to whomever has the most money to contribute.…

According to David Schultz (2013) the Constitution does rule out corporations to be persons. Therefore, why would one think that corporations are persons entitled to Constitutional protection? Previously slaves were not considered persons in 1857 with the Dred Scott v. Sanford (Shultz, 2013). Also in 1971, Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court did not define the fetus as a person (Shultz, 2013) . However, in 1886 in County of Santa Clara v. Southern Pacific Railroad Company, the Supreme Court accepted that corporations were persons for purpose of the Fourteenth Amendment (Shultz, 2013). On one side, corporations have due process rights and cannot be searched without a warrant but corporations have no privileges against self-incrimination. The government has greater leeway to regulate corporate speech. In 2010, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled that efforts to prevent corporations from spending money for political purposes violated first amendment rights (Shultz, 2013).…

The Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision stated that corporations, like people, have a right to free speech, and that the spending money in campaigns is a form of expression, so the result was that it took down regulations against corporations spending money on advertisements directly for and against candidates. The court did not act accordingly to Rawls because I will argue that his concept of restrictions and regulations placed on liberties, so that everyone has a fair and equal scheme of liberties is violated. I agree with Rawls that courts decision is wrong because, I do not agree that corporations should have the same rights as people. Moreover, the courts decision ultimately undermines the whole democratic structure that is in place and supports the rule of the rich because those with unlimited spending for campaigns, will be able to buy elections.…

The world is entering a period where corporations are gaining more power in society. Multinational business corporations will ultimately become more powerful than the government. Corporations influence decisions made by the government by providing campaign funding and lobbying. Businesses strive to satisfy their consumers’ wants and needs far well than the government strives to satisfy the wants of its population. Financial crisis and recession can begin in areas where jobs provided by corporations are lost, granting businesses power over the job market and gross domestic product. This essay will address how corporations are gaining power because of the relationship they share with the government, capability to keep consumers satisfied, and by providing the country with numerous job opportunities.…
