Charles Spurgen Johnson was the son of Charles Henry Johnson a Baptiste minister. They were pretty much lucky to be a little more upper class .Charles Spurgen witnessed a lynching at twelve years of age from intoxicated white men. He watched how his father stood alone brave and didn’t feel threatened he was a role model for his son as well as many other African American. This line stood out to me from the reading “Muse” “Johnson thus grew up with both a deep hatred of racial injustice and an understanding of the limits of individuals bravery in confronting it”. This part stood out to me because most African Americans weren’t brave enough to stand up for there right the they feel they were beneath these people. As far as his son…

The Little Bison River flows from small glaciers in the high cirques of the Rocky Mountains east to the Great Plains of North America, where it ultimately joins the Missouri system. The valley through the Rockies contains a few small towns which are supported by the ski industry and tourism. Recently, extensive natural gas deposits have been discovered in the area, and salvage archaeology projects have been funded to assess the nature of archaeological resources prior to the construction of pipelines, access roads, and well heads. You have been asked to summarize the prehistory of the area for a book on the local history of the resort town of Poplar, soon to celebrate its centennial. Because the precise location of drill sites and pipeline routes must remain confidential to prevent land speculation, the government has not allowed access to the detailed salvage reports. It has, however, provided you with accurate summaries of the findings of the salvage archaeologists, prepared by the office of the government archaeologist. The Little Bison River runs through a formerly glaCiated valley with a typical "U" cross-section ~fig. 8.1). At its western end the valley begins below a series of high cirques, most containing small glaciers. From these, streams descend steeply to the valley floor, forming the Little Bison River. The river flows east through the broad valley bottom, passing through two major mountain ranges before cutting through the foothills and entering the plains, where it merges with the Whiskey River. The valley floor consists of broad, well-drained glacial outwash terraces, above which steep mountain slopes rise to either rocky peaks or treeless plateaus. . Climate is continental, with cold winters and warm summers. Precipitation occurs as snow from November to March, but deep snow is rare on the lower terraces of the main valley because of high winds. Summer precipitation occurs as localized…

Jamaica Kincaid, born Elaine Cynthia Potter, has clearly never been content with accepting the world as presented to her. She changed her name, as she felt it wasn’t representative of her origins or the history of her bloodline. Moreover, her name wasn’t the only name she had a problem with; in her passage,”In History,” she undertakes the enormous task of demolishing and reestablishing our understanding of the names we encounter on a daily basis. Through intentionally withholding information and repetition, she takes apart our traditionally accepted, racially constructed worldview piece by piece, replacing it with the rarely explored truths of what naming does to a people and to a place.…

Sizer’s book, Horace’s Compromise: The Dilemma of the American High School, is a fictional story that represents the reality of the true educational system. The main character, Horace Smith, is a highly respected English teacher at Franklin High School who is facing the dilemma of many reality educators; the affects of the very controlled, standardized system of high school. Horace is at the age when many teachers are near retirement; however, he isn’t leaving anytime soon. Sizer quotes that “He believes—perversely, he often thinks—that Franklin High is not nearly what it could be. He wants to stay on and make it better.” As an educator, Horace must compromise his natural intuition when it comes to teaching, for he is faced with a muddled school system in which he must abide by. Throughout the passage, Sizer illustrates Horace’s view on how fragmenting the system is on the school and all the different affects it has. Horace believes that “Everything in the school affects everything else.” Horace sees how the system doesn’t directly affect students, but how it mainly affects the teachers, leaving them with little control when it comes to teaching the students. He believes that “The major elements of schooling are controlled outside the teachers’ world.” This exposes the main root of the problem—the standardized system. Horace believes that the state district, which controls the entire system, is overly powerful, only taking consideration to standardized test scores and uses those results to determine how the school system should be constructed, causing the teachers to function rather mechanically in the school setting. Horace’s concept is that “Obviously, they don’t trust us…The folk higher up are sure they know better.” This clearly entails why students face this dilemma as well. Horace describes the students as “conventional,” meaning that the all adhear to accepted standards. He believes that students take advantage of this greatly, stating that “The kids play a…
