Sinha R. K., Hollier R. K., A review of production control in cellular manufacture, International Journal of Production Research Sep/Oct 84, Vol. 22 issue 5, p773, 17p. Retrieved from: http://search.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.liberty.edu:2048/login.aspx?direct=true&db=bth&AN=5783704&site=ehost-live&scope=site In this article the authors discuss some of the most important and significant steps that production control needs to follow when it comes to scheduling in cellular manufacturing. The authors point out that it’s important to have a clear understanding of the part number families in order to balance out the cell with the machines and man power needed to run the cell efficiency. They point out that running in a batch mode helps control the work in process and achieve a desirable flow through the cell. They go on to say that scheduling the cell is complex and it’s important that the cell layout is such that the cell can maintain the level of work in process.

    In an assembly line the work moves in an efficiently and orderly manner from one workstation to the next until the finished product comes off from the end of the line. This layout is suitable for mass production where the demand for a product is stable and volume is high. The kinds of products that are made on the assembly line are products that are standard for a general market and not for a particular customer. If it were for a particular customer, they would be in the cellular layout. Here there is no signage used because each individual knows their job and know where they need to go at certain times of the day. The advantage of the product layout is the efficiency and the ease of its use. The only disadvantage that can be seen here is the inflexibility it has. Let’s say that the product design had to be changed, there would be a lot of time that will be wasted on trying to assembly a new line or fix the one that is already there. Although that is a disadvantage for the product layout, ere the cycle time and the flow time of the product are substantially low compared to a cellular layout because all hands are on deck and are working together.     Woodward developed a scale and organized the firms according to technical complexity of the manufacturing process.
