Anne Shirley's Mistakes
I believe that "tomorrow is a new day with no new mistakes in it yet" - Anne of Green Gables. I have always liked this quote because despite the fact that Anne Shirley, the main character in Anne of Green Gables, makes countless mistakes, she never stops trying. I remember the first time I heard this quote. I was snuggled in my bed, listening to my mom read to me what would soon turn out to be my favorite book of all time. This quote resonated with me as soon as my mother read it aloud. The quote acknowledges that there are no new mistakes yet. There will be more mistakes in the coming day, but no mistake is so big that it can not be fixed. Anne always kept on trying, whether it was with her friends or at school or at home.     That’s the only thing that never fails...” The quote goes on, but that essentially sums it up. I can say without a doubt that this quote changed the way I viewed the world, and the way I interacted with it. This is inpart is because of when I first really read this passage, grade 7. By the end of grade 7 I was entering the my first bout of depression. At the time I didn’t know there was a name and reason I felt how I did, all I knew was that a never ending grey day had taken over my life and I couldn’t change it. I felt sad, therefore I learned. Just like the quote had told me. I learned about JFK (mainly his assassination), the Son of Sam, Quantum Theory, Neuroplasticity, Ancient Greece, and anything I could get my hands on. It gave me something to focus on other than the never ending grey day. The quote gave me a reason to get up each day and go to school, because if nothing else I was there too learn.     In America, the fortie s and fifties was a time of racism and racial segregation. The Declaration of Independence states "all men are created equal" and America is viewed as the land of equal opportunity. However, blacks soon found the lack of truth in these statements; and with the Montgomery bus boycott marking the beginning of retaliation, the civil rights movement will grow during the mid – sixties. In the autobiography, Coming of Age in Mississippi, Anne Moody describes the environment, the thoughts, and the actions that formed her life while growing up in the segregated southern state of Mississippi. As a young child, Moody accepted society as the way it was and did not see a difference in the skin color of a white person as opposed to that of a black. It was not until a movie incident did she begin to realize that the color of her skin made her inferior. "Their whiteness provided them with a pass to downstairs in that nice section and my blackness sent me to the balcony. Now that I was thinking about it, their schools, homes, and streets were better than mine." Soon after Moody entered high school, Emmett Till, a fourteen-year-old boy from Chicago, was killed for whistling at a white woman. "Emmett Till's murder had proved it was a crime, punishable by death, for a Negro man to even whistle at a white woman in Mississippi." Although her mother refused to give an explanation of the organization, Moody learned about the NAACP from one of her teachers soon after the incident. It was at age fifteen that Moody really began to hate people. Not only did she hate the whites that committed the murders, but she also hated the blacks for allowing the horrid actions to occur. When there were rumors about black men having sexual relationships with white women, Negro men became afraid even to walk the streets.
