Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl is a young teenager’s personal diary written from 1942-1944. Anne was a fun-loving girl living with her family in Amsterdam, Holland. Anne’s father gave her a diary for her thirteenth birthday and it was her favorite present. She decided she would write daily entries about her life in her new diary Anne hoped her diary would be like having a real friend and not be so lonely, therefore she named the diary “Kitty.” The first days of her diary Anne writes that she was born in Frankfurt, Germany and then they were forced to move to Holland when the Nazis and Hitler took over Germany. Everything is getting to her. From the cramped quarters to her roommate Mr. Dussel driving her crazy, Anne is having a hard to keeping a positive attitude. She admits that she cries a lot when she is alone. Her negative emotions grow stronger as the war moves closer to the annex. She is fighting more with her mom and feels as though there is no love left between them. Even though Anne is miserable, lonely, and scared she tries not to complain too much. While reading it I learned a lot about what happened in World War II. I felt like I was there with them in the annex afraid to make a noise in fear of being caught. I feel like I have a better understanding of the Holocaust and how horrible it was. The characters all had vastly different personalities that each contributed something to their journey. It was if I knew them, especially Anne who it seemed like was my best friend telling me about something she experienced. I even felt annoyed when Mrs.Van Daan would make her insulting remarks. Knowing these people were real and not just made-up characters really changed how I looked at it. I felt like I was attached to them. Throughout the diary I was able to relate to Anne’s issues with her sister and her parents, and I think other people will
