Historical Perspective from “The Diary of Anne Frank”
The historical events in the play helped the readers understand what was going on when Anne and her family went into hiding during World War II. In 1935 the Nuremberg laws are passed in Germany stripping Jews of their rights as German citizens. Laws passed over the next several years further isolate Jews including the requirement to wear a yellow Star of David. Germany invades Poland triggering the beginning of World War II. Growing Nazi restrictions on the daily lives of Dutch Jews forced to from girls to attend all Jewish school. On Anne's 13th birthday Otto gives her diary.
May 1940 the Nazis invade the Netherlands. Once in control they set up a brutal police force the Gestapo to administer laws to isolate Dutch Jews from the rest of the Dutch population. On July 6th 1942 the Franks go into hiding after receiving an order from Margot to report to a forced labor camp. They hide in the Attic rooms above Mr. Frank's workplace with the help of close friends. Another family the Van Pels joins them followed by Fritz Pfeffer months later. While they were hiding There were people at the place beneath them during the day so they had to be quiet until 6:30. After 6:30 they could talk have dinner and do things they would do during the day. June 1944 the allies carry out a successful invasion of France. There success gives many who live under nazi occupation hope the end of the war is near. On August 4th 1944 The hiding place of the Franks was discovered and the families were arrested. All of the families who hid in the attic were deported from the Netherlands to Auschwitz death camp. After that they all got sent to different camps and Mr. Frank was the only one who had survived. Anne and Margot both died of the disease
