George Orwell's Animal Farm is a satire written about the Stalin Era. The events and characters in Animal Farm parallel the early history of the Soviet Union. While all of the animals seem to have parallel characters in the real world, Orwell directly connects the character Napoleon to Joseph Stalin in a letter to the publisher in 1945. Orwell created Napoleon to represent Stalin, a dictator who was supposed to reshape the Soviet Union but instead created many problems during his regime. He used a secret police force that is also noted in animal farm by the puppies that Napoleon raises to be his secret guard dogs. Orwell shows a strong disapproval of the Stalinist corruption of socialist's ideals. This book has become well-known for showing what happens when power is overthrown only to have the over thrower become power-hungry and oppressive. This is represented by the swift transformation of the animals on the farm. The seven principles of animalism, known as the seven commandments, are reduced to a single principle that reads, "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." The animals become more and more like the humans that they had once thought were awful. They walk upright, wear clothes and carry whips. The animals have become the very thing that they had been working against. If nothing else, we are left with the feeling that a totalitarian government is never a good idea.…

Leaders use many tactics to withhold power and maintain control over the ignorant people. Joseph Stalin, the leader of the USSR from 1922-1952, used many clever and sometimes gory techniques to keep his power over the Soviet people. These strategies are shown in George Orwell's allegory of the Russian revolution, Animal Farm. Napoleon, the self-proclaimed leader of Animal Farm and allegorical representation of Joseph Stalin, has quite a few crafty and cunning ways to retain his authority over the animals. For example, by only educating the piglets and dogs, Napoleon keeps the majority of the animals uneducated and ignorant and therefore easier to manipulate. By blaming mistakes and wrongdoings on Snowball, an exiled pig who is an allegorical…

    1. Corruption of Socialist IdealsExamples of the theme of corruption of socialist ideals can be seen throughout Animal Farm. Once Napoleon takes over as the leader of the farm, his reign becomes corrupted. In the book Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin andSnowball represents Leon Trotsky. The struggle between Stalin and Trotsky during the rise of Stalin is seen in the rivalry between Napoleon and Snowball. In both the book and history, the more politically power and spiteful Stalin (Napoleon) banishes the more idealistic Trotsky (Snowball) from society. This is all done in order for Napoleon to gain more power. Another example of corruption is when Napoleon decides to kill anyone who is against him or he does not trust. The animals on the farms didn’t have a choice. If Napoleon didn’t like them they were essentially dead. This act by Napoleon was very similar to what Stalin did to his counterparts during his era. One last act that shows the corruption of social ideals is when Napoleon disobeys the Seven Commandments of Animalism. Animal farm was formed on these commandments but since Napoleon has all the power he can do what he wants. Then he gets the pig, Squealer, to justify his actions to the other animals. Napoleon eventually goes on to change the Seven Commandments to just one: “all animals are created equal, but some animals more equal.” (Joseph Stalin)2. Class StratificationAnimal farm was initially formed under the commandment that “all animals are equal” but that is not case. Shortly after the animals take control of the farm, division between classes takes place. The pigs consider themselves “mindworkers” while the other animals are laborers. While the rest of the animals do the work the pigs do not have to do as much physical work. Once Napoleon takes over as leader, the division of class only gets wider. The pigs are able to manipulate the rest of the animals on the farm. Boxer, the horse on the farm, develops the saying “I will…

George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm,’ is an allegoric novel set on an English farm, telling the story of the animal’s difficulty in overthrowing Mr Jones and running the farm. However, the storyline shares many parallels with the Russian Revolution from 1915-1945. One of the many similarities between the two is the way the leader preserved his power. The character Napoleon, a young pig, can be compared to Joseph Stalin, as they both created and sustained their power using similar methods. Napoleon did this by taking advantage of the animal’s poor memory and supplying them with incorrect information and propaganda. He also created his power by blaming all of the farm’s misfortunes on Snowball, who can be compared to the intellect, Leon Trotsky, as he was a common enemy and scapegoat. The final method Napoleon used to keep and generate his power is through the use of emotive persuasion, more specifically fear.…

Could you ever imagine being physically and emotionally controlled and mentally corrupted by a single “being” everyday? In both novels, Animal Farm and 1984, the author, George Orwell shows how Napoleon and Big Brother, both head figurines for their society, contain numerous correspondences linking both of them. In the novel Animal Farm the author displays how Napoleon exhibits dictating traits while trying to selfishly control a government for his own contentment in return, than everyone’s contentment as a whole. However, when his strong dictatorship begins to terminate, it seems the book reveals some thoughts of the animals wanting to return back to the type of government that they once had when they first rebelled against Mr. Jones due to…

Animal Farm, written by George Orwell in 1945, portrays the Russian Revolution by using animals on a farm as symbols of political figures, such as Lenin and Stalin, and historical events as well. Orwell often wrote books such as Animal farm so that he can reflect and share his concern on the political and social circumstances of his day@. After the animals were treated brutally, they decided to revolt and rule the farm on their own. This resulted in them being in the hands of Napoleon, who was one of the pigs. Napoleon was not the leader who they thought he was, but a corrupted dominator. This was much like the Russian Revolution where the citizens revolted against Czar and later resulting in having Stalin, who was much like Napoleon as their leader. The book was very convincing in getting the message of the Russian Revolution and how power can be dangerous when in the wrong hands, across to the readers.…

In fact, some of the characters in the story personify people who were a part of the Russian Revolution. Napoleon is based on Joseph Stalin, Snowball is based on Leon Trotsky, Old Major is based on Karl Marx, and Mr. Jones is based on Tsar Nicholas II. Animal Farm starts out with a situational irony when the animals are very unhappy with the humans and decide to take over the farm and run it themselves. The two pigs Napoleon and Snowball assume the roles of leadership but do not get along very well. This is a situational irony because it is unexpected and ironic for animals to be running a farm. There is also some dramatic irony because the reader knows that the animals are plotting against Farmer Jones, but Farmer Jones does not. The idea of a revolution forms after Old Major brings all the animals together to speak of a dream he had where all animals live together with no humans to oppress or control them. This idea is based on Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto which laid out the basic principles of what we now call communism. Both dreams were seriously flawed and laid out an idea but not how to fulfill or determine what happens after. The animals then took leadership and made the 7 commandments which they were to live by. These rules were supposed to keep order and civilization and to help create their own…

He makes a comparison among animal’s characters during the rebellion against the Russian Revolution and Stalin. Orwell shows how people can be fooled by tyrants to believing anything. Human beings and animals have many connections in both good and bad ways; one obvious correlation is selfishness. Naturally, humans have always prioritized their own superiority. In real world, nations want to be dominant and above others similar to human’s selfish desire to be greater than other humans. Nowadays, corruption are way worse than it was before. Egotistical people are finding new ways to cheat and make their way up in society without doing anything.
