Chapter One

According to Major, what is the cause of all the animals’ problems? Major blames the animals’ suffering solely on human beings. Mr. Jones and his men have been exploiting animals for ages, Major says, taking all of the products of their labor- eggs, milk, ect for themselves and producing nothing of value to offer the animals in return.

What motto does Major give the animals? The message Major gives the animals is “Why, work night and day, body and soul, for the overthrow of the human race! That is my message to you, comrades: Rebellion” this message means why are all the animals doing work for the success of humans, we must rebel and stand up for ourselves.

What are the commandments Major gives the animals? Can you think of ways each of them could be considered a vice? The commandments Major gives the animals are “ No animal must ever live in a house, or sleep in a bed, or wear clothes, or drink alcohol, or smoke tobacco, or touch money, or engage in trade. All habits of man are evil. And above all, no animal must ever tyrannize over his own kind. No animal must kill another animal. All animals are equal. These could be considered a vice because they are all the things that Mr Jones and to the animals he resembles ultimate evil.

Why do the animals like the song “Beasts of England” so much that they memorize it on the spot? To what emotions and needs does it appeal? The animals like the song “Breast of England” because it represents everything they stand for and want to happen, the emotions the song conveys is angry and determination for every beast to rebel and start a revolution where creatures rule.

At the beginning of the novel, the highly respected Middle White Boar – old Major – presents the animals with a speech, which is intended to plant within the animals his vision of a liberal future for all animals. The essence of Old Majors speech is that ‘...The life of an animal is misery and slavery...’ He is telling them of the reality of their existence - that they are merely slaves for mankind. Old Major explains to the animals that man is the reason why they are forced to persist in such appalling conditions of starvation, over-work and murder. Old Major passes on the wisdom that, to the animals, ‘...Man is the only real enemy we have. Remove Man from the scene and the root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished for ever...’. Old Major tells the animals that, in order to achieve the goal of freedom from Man, they must rebel against the human race. ‘...Work day and night, body and soul, for the overthrow of the human race! That is my message to you, comrades...’…

The primary issue that Old Major has with the principle of working for man is that the animals do the work for no benefit, while Mr. Jones lives a life of excess. Old major is disgruntled by the fact that the man barks orders at his animals, and the animals remain malnourished and neglected even though they do the bulk of the man’s work. Soon after Napoleon and Snowball seize control of Animal Farm, as the animals work tenaciously in the fields, the pigs “…did not actually work, but directed and supervised the others” (50). The pigs’ integrity continues to decline as the story unfolds; the reader sees that they become more akin to the parasitic man which they had sought to be liberated from than diligent leaders they portrayed themselves to be. The pigs, who have taken the place of man at the farm, now begin to reap the benefits of the other animals’ work.…

According to him, once they "Remove Man from the scene," then "the main cause of hunger and overwork" will be permanently stopped forever. Clearly, old Major believes that Man is capable only of doing harm and that animals are capable only of doing good. Such one-dimensional thinking that ignores the desire for power built into all living things can only result in it's being proved false. Also ironic is old Major's warning to the animals: "Remember also that in fighting against Man, we must not come to look like him." This warning is ignored by Napoleon and the other pigs, who, by the novel's end, completely look like their human…
