Animal Farm Allegory Analysis
In chapters 1 and 2 of Animal Farm by George Orwell some major events take place. After a drunken Mr. Jones goes to bed, all the animals on the farm gather in the barn for a meeting. Old Major delivers a speech acknowledging the neglectful actions of their leader and the unfortunate conditions they live under, approaching the subject of a revolt. Later, a certain group of animals takes his ideas into their own hands and stirs the idea of rebellion even further. In the same manner, during the reign of the Qajar dynasty in Iran, certain leaders became corrupt and neglectful, ignoring the needs of the people. First, Mr. Jones is like certain Qajar kings in that they are neglectful, self-serving leaders. Next, the dissatisfaction of the animals is like that of the dissatisfaction of the Iranian people in that they are both tired of living under oppressive conditions and forced to serve selfish, neglectful leaders who make no attempt to fix problems that arise. Finally, the pigs who stir the idea of rebellion for the animals are like the group that stirs the idea of rebellion for the Iranian people in that they both serve as the intelligentsia who organize and control the rebellion, and thus hold the power and political influence that comes along with it. Regarding the future of Iran, it seems that Iran will experience a new period of openness which the nation has not seen since Ayatollah Khomeini took power. Reformists, who want better relations with the rest of the world and more freedoms at home, won all 30 Tehran seats in the recent February elections. Reformists and moderates are targeting greater foreign investment, which should create more jobs for young people. Hopefully, this means a new period in Iran’s economic development based on national abilities and international
