Fear Have you ever been so afraid of something that you felt too scared to fight back? That happens to be the case for the animals in the novel Animal Farm. Old Major, an old well regarded boar, tells them of a dream he has in which all animals live together with no human beings to oppress or control them. He tells the animals that they must work toward such a paradise through rebellion. The animals manage to defeat the farmer, Mr. Jones, in a battle, running him off the land. Three younger pigs, Snowball, Napoleon, and Squealer, formulate Old Major’s main principles into a philosophy called Animalism. They rename the property Animal Farm and dedicate themselves to achieving Major’s dream. The rest of the novel chronicles the pigs’ tyranny over the animals. What George Orwell is saying about the nature of fear is that terror is an elementary tool to provoke people into submission and eventually gain control.
As time passes, Napoleon and Snowball increasingly gain control over the future of the farm by using Squealer’s convincing speech to manipulate the animals. For instance, each time they dare question an aspect of the pigs’ leadership, Squealer threatens them with Mr. Jones’s return. “Day and night we are watching over your welfare it is for your sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples. Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back! Yes, Jones would come back!”(36) This is undoubtedly threatening to the animals, because it would mean another battle that, if lost, would result in a return to their former submissive lifestyle. Jones’s return is such a serious threat that it suppresses the animal’s curiosity and causes them to permit the pigs to eat the milk and apples. By using fear in threats and propaganda, the pigs slowly become more powerful.
