Anil's Ghost Sparknotes

Anil’s Ghost is an engaging book that gives off a type of energy that gives the reader an interest. In this book Michael Ondaatje, the author, stated that this book was written under his own experience. Michael was going through some conflict dealing with peace while living in Sri Lanka. It’s convincing to follow that symbolism within its themes, anecdotes and allusions that were used under the influence. Debatably, Michael’s intentions on this book were to make these components the main role in this novel.

Working with Sarath-a local official who also fits into the situation Anil is in- finds help with a painter and a sculptor, Ananda. With the conquest of their research and findings, they often run into symbols that give a specific meaning that fits into the bigger picture of the story.
For instance, Anil as forensic pathologist seeks to identify a meaning behind a skeleton. Her whole idea was to bring the government to justice by finding a way to connect the gov’t towards the killings. The only way was the skeleton, known as the Sailor’s body, is the only way they can conclude. The skeleton represents the victims of the civil war. In addition, Ananda, the sculptor and painter, is being used to help reconstruct the Sailor’s head to help identify whom it maybe. Juxtaposing the skeleton with the firm and broken head symbolizes Sri Lanka’s deaths and the mess it has caused. With the conquest of bringing peace and justice, the people of Sri Lanka must open their eyes and see that in order to make progress they have a take a stand, which beats the people’s identities that were forgotten. For example, Anil has a conflict being viewed differently being in America and Europe. In America she wanted to be a swimmer, but in Sri Lanka she is being viewed different. She just wants to be viewed the same regardless what’s different to others. Being said, this novel is written with the idea of peace and an important theme to this is its war and effects such as its the effects on families, individuals, most importantly the society.
