Encoding Information with Light’s Orbital Angular Momentum
Light is the future of communication, traveling at 3,000,000 meters per second, the cosmic speed limit of the universe. Its tremendous speed makes it optimal for data transmission. The conventional method to encode information in light is through amplitude modulation, i.e. light pulses, time division multiplexing, i.e. delaying the time light beams enter a channel, and wavelength multiplexing, i.e. multiple beams of light in one channel. Regardless of the method, information is stored in binary code, strings of ones and zeroes. Optimally, the channel capacity for a signal A is x bits/s where x does not account for signal deterioration (Figure 1).

Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), storing light beams of different wavelengths in one channel is an efficient method of storing and sending information. Different sources of light are coupled together with a multiplexer, a device that combines them into one beam of light. The beam travels through a transfer medium. The demultiplexer, usually the mirror image of the multiplexer, separates into the respective wavelengths that comprise it. In a way, multiplexing performs a function f(x) on the different beams of light and the demultiplexer performs the inverse of that function f’(x). However, WDM is no longer efficient in meeting the increasing demand for more bandwidth, the information capacity of a channel. WDM is also not likely to meet the demand because of its intrinsic nature to overlap channels. If we take Input A and combine it with Input B, the input A+B will not stay distinct. They will merge into Input C. We may not find a workaround.     Contextual Outline Humans are social animals and have successfully communicated through the spoken word, and then, as the use of written codes developed, through increasingly sophisticated graphic symbols. The use of a hard copy medium to transfer information in coded form meant that communication was able to cross greater distances with improved accuracy of information transfer.     Angular momentum and its properties were devised over time by many of the great minds in physics. Newton and Kepler were probably the two biggest factors in the evolution of angular momentum. Angular momentum is the force which a moving body, following a curved path, has because of its mass and motion. Angular momentum is possessed by rotating objects. Understanding torque is the first step to understanding angular momentum.<br><br>Torque is the angular "version" of force. The units for torque are in Newton-meters. Torque is observed when a force is exerted on a rigid object pivoted about an axis and. This results in the object rotating around that axis. "The torque ? due to a force F about an origin is an inertial frame defined to be ? ? r x F"1 where r is the vector position of the affected object and F is the force applied to the object.<br><br>To understand angular momentum easier it is wise to compare it to the less complex linear momentum because they are similar in many ways. "Linear momentum is the product of an object's mass and its instantaneous velocity. The angular momentum of a rotating object is given by the product of its angular velocity and its moment of inertia. Just as a moving object's inertial mass is a measure of its resistance to linear acceleration, a rotating object's moment of inertia is a measure of its resistance to angular acceleration."2 Factors which effect a rotating object's moment of inertia are its mass and on the distribution of the objects mass about the axis of rotation. A small object with a mass concentrated very close to its axis of rotation will have a small moment of inertia and it will be fairly easy to spin it with a certain angular velocity. However if an object of equal mass, with its mass more spread out from the axis of rotation, will have a greater moment of inertia and will be harder to accelerate to the same angular velocity.3<br><br>To calculate the moment of inertia of an object one can imagine that the object…
