Anglo Saxon Definition Of A Hero
Over time, the definition of a hero has changed since the Anglo-Saxons to today in Hollywood. Because the definition of a hero has changed over time, who our heroes are and what makes them a hero has changed also. The Mirriam-Webster Dictionary explains that a hero is “a person admired for great deeds or fine qualities.” To me, that means that a hero would be selfless, honest, and hardworking. Hollywood believes that a hero is someone who is attractive, rich, and successful in business. The way the Anglo-Saxons would describe a hero, is that they are strong, brave, and selfless. When comparing my definition of a hero to the Anglo-Saxon definition, they are similar. We both believe, a hero is someone who put others needs above their own. The …show more content…
The reason he is my hero is because he has been through may trials in his life. Those trials include not having both parents in the household and also living on his own at age seventeen, while taking care of his two younger siblings. Using the knowledge he obtained through those trials, he learned how to be a self-reliant and also how to show compassion for others. Similar to how I have a hero, the Anglo-Saxons also have a hero. Their hero is Beowulf. Beowulf is “the strongest of the Geats- greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world-” (Beowulf 26) who was brave enough to challenge Grendel. Grendel is “mankind’s enemy” (25). Beowulf challenged Grendel because he wanted to save Hrothgar’s kingdom. A hero in Hollywood, would be Steve Jobs. Jobs is “credited with revolutionizing the computer industry by democratizing the technology and making machines smaller, cheaper, intuitive and accessible to everyday consumers” (Steve Jobs Biography). He is a hero, because he is intelligent and he provided the world with a gadget that has never been seen. We all know what our heroes, did, but what made them the way they …show more content…
Without his past challenges, he wouldn’t be so patient, hardworking, selfless, and forgiving. Similar to how my dad used his trials to better himself, Beowulf used Hrothgar’s challenges to learn more about himself. Beowulf learned how to establish a strong bond between himself and his men, based off of how weak the bond was between Hrothgar and his men. By learning how to establish that strong relationship, he was able to conquer Grendel. In comparison to Beowulf, Steve Jobs was able to use the acquired knowledge to accomplish a hard task. Steve Jobs was able to invent the Apple brand technology, including the iPhone and iPod. We all have heroes but who we call heroes may change as time goes

During the Anglo-Saxon period, people worshiped Hero's. Here are a couple of ways how a modern day hero can be compared to one in the past.

Nolan Ryan will be my choice of a classic modern day hero. One of the firsts of a hero's characteristic is that he performs "Outstanding Deeds". On page thirty-five in Beowulf "Higlac's brave follower tearing out his hand of the monster, his hatred rose higher but his power has gone." So to me that could be called an outstanding deed. Now Nolan Ryan is not a War hero but a baseball player. He was forty-five at the time and he had thrown 5,511 strikeouts, witch is a record that will not be broken anytime soon. Another way to be called a hero is to give great speeches. On page 31 of Beowulf "Hail Hrothagi…………." Beowulf is very good at this but on the other hand Nolan Ryan is a very humble man. So he never really gave speeches. The third characteristic of a hero is to boast about his feats. Beowulf does a good job of boasting in this next line in Beowulf on page 31, "And I am stronger than anyone in the world." To me that is a very big boast on Beowulf's part. Now for Nolan Ryan he is a very modest man and never had any reason to boast about anything, his numbers did the talking for him. Now the last of the of characteristics that is that he descended from Royalty. Now on page 31 in Beowulf, "Higlac is my cousin and my King." Now on the other hand Nolan Ryan's position in baseball had nothing to do with his family. He was noting more than a country boy from Alvin, Texas.

Now all of those were characteristic of an Anglo-Saxon hero that are very different from those of a modern day hero. The first of them is if the Public eye likes the hero to be humble and have good sportsmanship. Nolan Ryan never went around taunting his opponents or talking about how good he is. But on the other hand Beowulf talked very highly of himself. I don't think the public would have liked that very much about him. Another characteristic of…

What is a hero? A hero to me is a person who is brave, has a bunch of courage and knows right from wrong. You don’t have to have a mask or a suit to be a hero. A hero is willing to help a person at anytime. A hero can kill their enemy with kindness. For an example I believe Jackie Robinson is an incredible, life changing hero. He had been the first African American to play in the Major League Baseball. He had played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. They played him and they had ended racial segregation.…

What do you think of when you see the word "hero?" A person who possesses great skill and courage, no doubt; one who uses those attributes to aid others in ways large or small, but what about Beowulf? While he may not spring to mind, Beowulf perfectly emphasizes heroic qualities-those of an epic hero. In the Anglo-Saxon folk epic Beowulf, he uses strength, skill, and a little help from the gods to defeat a series of deadly and monstrous foes. Beowulf's honor, courage, and prowess in battle mark him as one of literature's great epic heroes.…

What is a hero? Many people have different definitions of what a hero can be for example Beowulf. In the story Beowulf, Beowulf the hero is described as a great fighter and a man of tremendous strength. In my opinion a hero is not what the story describes a hero as. my definition of a hero is a good person who does something nice or saves somebody. A hero can also be someone you look up too. The Hollywood's definition of a hero is way different than my definition of a hero their definition of a hero is somebody who saves lives, has supernatural powers and are always protagonist in the stories. Some traits a hero has to make him a hero are they are nice, brave, have powers, caring and are patient. My definition and Hollywood's definition of…

A hero in the dictionary is defined as “the chief character in a book, play or film who is typically identified with good qualities and with whom the reader is expected to sympathise”, while this simple definition of a hero may be sufficient we must take into account that there are different types of heroes. J.S. Morin advocates that there are seven types of hero the first being the ‘perfect’ hero who is a paragon of virtue. The second is the ‘misfit’ hero who is unlike anyone else within their story, they are likely a social outcast with a cause for being ostracised such as their race or religion. The third is the ‘grizzled old-timer’ who is more often used in group settings, his vast experience makes him a good vehicle for imparting knowledge to other characters. The fourth is the ‘everyman’ who isn’t always the strongest or smartest character but he is relatable and often faces similar problems and fears to those of the reader. There is no special power nor divine sign that tells this hero that he is destined for greatness. The fifth is the ‘anti-hero’ who makes us question what a hero really is, is one good deed enough to redeem a person? The sixth hero is the ‘prodigy’ who is raw and unformed, the perfect material to build a story around, he needs to learn everything, to experience the wonders of whatever power makes them special and finally there is the ‘un-hero’ who is in all the wrong places at all the wrong times and he does more to hinder the cause of good than to help it. In my opinion Morin leaves out one type of hero who is vital within literature and that is the ‘romantic’ hero who is a character that rejects established norms and conventions, has been rejected by society, and has the self as…

Heroism, then and now. When I say then and now I mean in the early hundreds to before Christ was born, I'm talking Anglo-Saxon time, I'm talking Celtic, early roman days in great Britain. Before there were superstars and all these talks of these fictional comic book characters there were heroes. Now when I say the word hero or when people hear it now days the first thought that comes to mind are superman, and batman, but no, those aren't heroes. What your going to read today is the difference of heroes then and now, yes there's a big difference, I know your thinking all heroes are the same, they save the day right? Wrong, not only do they save the day but they do so much more.…
