Andrew Lloyd Webber
My favorite composer is Andrew Lloyd Webber. He has written music for The Likes of Us, Cats, Phantom of The Opera, The Sound of Music, and more. This year he will write music for The Wizard of Oz. he was born on March 22, 1948 in Kensington, London, England. He been married twice and divorced them, but now he is happily married with 5 children. He has composed 13 musicals! He started writing songs when he was very young. He is not just a composer he is also a panelist, a businessman, a songwriter, and a theatre director. He has won many awards for his work, including Academy Awards, Golden globes, Grammys, Tonys, and Oliviers. Many people know him for writing the music for The Lion King. He is one of the only famous composers still around today.
He stared writing his own music at the age of 9. He also put on productions with his aunt in his toy theatre that he built. By age 15, he had composed the music for a book called Old Opossum’s Book of Practical Cats.
Webber was a Queen’s Scholar at Westminster School. He also studied history briefly at Magdalene Collage in Oxford, England. He graduated from the Royal College of Music where he pursued his interest in musical theatre.
When he was just 17 he collaborated with lyricist, Tim Rice, in which they wrote a Broadway type musical, called The Likes of Us. This musical was not preformed until 2005. They also wrote a number of individual pop songs that were recorded as singles for record labels. A selection of these songs have been released on a 5 CD set.
When he was 20 he was commissioned along with Rice to write a piece for the Colet Court Preparatory School which resulted in the musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, a humorous retelling of the biblical story of Joseph.
Some of the songs that they wrote for Joseph, would be added to and updated for their 3rd collaboration called, Jesus: Superstar. Another collaboration resulted in a musical called Evita, which included the hit single, “Don’t Cry
