Early Life First things first, Lloyd Webber was born on March 22nd, 1948 in London, England. Everyone in his immediate family were involved with music in some way. Although, it was not publically performed until 2005 at Lloyd Webber’s Sydmonton Festival, a summer festival that takes place in Lloyd Webber’s estate. The first non-professional performance was done by a children’s theatre group. The group’s name was Kidz R Us. Anyway, after writing The Likes of Us, Lloyd Webber and Rice were assigned to write a religious piece. For two months, they made a “pop-cantata” version of Joseph and The Technicolor Dreamcoat, which was a retelling of the biblical story of Joseph. The play’s first performance was on March 1st, 1968. Right off the bat, it was a success. The play got longer and better with each performance. By the time it was officially done, it was 2 hours long. And it started as only 20 minutes! The musical celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2008. Their next project was in 1971 with a show called Jesus Christ Superstar. They recorded and album’s worth of music before producing the show, which became a tradition. Some argue that Jesus Christ Superstar is what shot Lloyd Webber to fame.
