In the novel, Hans recalls how in WWI his life was spared from battle in France, but his friend Erik Vandenburg was not. For that purpose, he then lived the rest of his life in guilt, knowing how easily it could’ve been the reverse. Knowing the fact that Erik also was married, while he was not, further caused him more self-condemnation, which worsened when Hans attempted to find his family and found that Erik had a son. His immense sadness is conveyed after leaving the family; “‘you never told me,’ he said to a dead Erik Vandenburg and the Stuttgart skyline. ‘You never told me you had a son.’” (pg. 179, Zusak). Next, Bystanders not only show a lack of compassion, but likewise/similarly, they show cruelty towards others who are in grave danger. In the short story, “And of Clay We Are Created”, by “Isabell Allende”, she shows a visible image in the reader’s head with her story by putting in page (22)“ He went to the Army field tents to offer relief in the form of vague promises to crowds of the rescued, then to the improvised hospital to offer a word of encouragement to doctors and nurses worn down from so many hours of tribulations. Then he asked to be taken to see Azucena, the little girl the whole world had seen. He waved to her with a limp statesman's hand, and microphones recorded his emotional voice and paternal tone as he told her that her courage had served as an example to the nation. The character that I'm drawn to in "And of Clay Are We Created" is Azucena because for all of the attention that was focused on her misery. Essentially this is national coverage of a girl suffering. The world can watch and do very little to act. The theme that stands outs to me is preserving. Azcuena holds on for as long as she can. The story is also about dealing with suffering and pain. To Rolf Carlé the girl was an inspiration to him and a way for him to reflect on his own pain. The reporter breaks reporting and tries to help Azucena but fails. The literary element is between the two characters Azucena and Rolf Carlé conversing with each other as almost a confession. You know that she won't make it but he promises,…

Often, we as humans tend to separate ourselves from stories and myths. If a story is fictitious, we immediately dismiss any possibility of relating and learning from it. However, some archetypal events and themes observed in literature may be far more real than we wish to admit. The loss of innocence is one such archetype. Despite having broad definition, the effects of the loss of innocence are narrow. Commonly, an innocent or ignorant individual experiences an event or realization causing a shift towards experience and knowledge. Archetypes are present in Roman and Greek myths, and are still used today, sometimes unknowingly, in stories, songs, and poems. This is likely because it is a reflection of events in our own lives, to a certain extent. The innocence of youth, prevalence of a life-changing event, and experience of adults are all observed in life and literature alike.…

Allende has often spoken about ¡®¡®And of Clay Are We Created¡¯¡¯ and its importance to her. The characters of the television reporter and his lover are both based on Allende¡¯s own experiences in journalism. In an interview with Marilyn Berlin Snell, she explains that the plot of the story is also based on fact: ¡®¡®This story really occurred. In 1985, we saw her on every television screen in the world, the face of Omaira S¨¢nchez, one of the thousands of victims of Colombia¡¯s Nevado Ruiz volcanic eruption. She is talking to me about patience, about endurance, about courage.¡¯¡¯ Reviewers of The Stories of Eva Luna have praised Allende¡¯s ability to adapt historical events into fiction, as she does in ¡®¡®And of Clay Are We…

Religious figure, Buddha, once stated, “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” In Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved, the past influences the present of characters lives in a number of ways. Throughout the novel, she had a hard time dealing with her painful past, leading to a difficulty in healing herself in the present. Sethe was excluded from the community, had painful memories about what she endured as a slave, and most importantly she is being “haunted” by her dead daughter. Nothing in the story ever fully dies off, just how Beloved continued to be present in 124 as a ghost. Other characters also worked to avoid the past because it was filled with pain for them. In the novel, Morrison demonstrates that the obsession of the past can invade the present, shaping our identity, and be consuming and destructive until the past is properly confronted. Ultimately, Sethe looks upon her history and learns to let go of it, creating a future for herself.…
