Since Ancient Greece was spread out into the individual city-states, it forced them to each have their own forms of government. Their governments ranged from military rule to dictatorship to democracies. In Athens under the rule of Pericles, their government was a democracy. Any man over the age of 18, who wanted to, could be involved and got paid for being part of the government like people do today. This influenced our government because although we do nat participate directly in day to day government functions, we participate indirectly. Athens also had a jury, who in trials made the final decisions, like we do today. You also had the magistrates, who went out ald enforced the laws like we have police officers do today. Ancient Greeks have…
The Greeks had a great many things to their list of achievements, from the monuments they built, to the masterfully created Parthenon that is still standing today. They worked hard to create what is known as a lost legacy nowadays; but how much of Greece is actually still influencing us today? The first concept that they invented that is still being used is the alphabet. This influence is probably the hugest because this essay right now is written with letters; an idea that was first made real by the Greeks. Before people used images to get their stuff across, but when the Greece came along it made writing way easier. Currently, we use the Roman alphabet, which was of course a more developed version of the Greek alphabet.…
In terms of architecture, both classical Greece and Rome are responsible for almost all advancements made in Western civilization. Ancient Greece’s architectural style can be separated into three defined orders: the Doric Order, the Ionic Order and the Corinthian Order, all which had a profound effect on Western architecture. They are best known for their supreme structures of temples, such as the Second Temple of Hera at Paestum, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Athena Nike. Even more importantly the architects of classical Rome made even more impactful innovations. The Romans were great reformers and they quickly adopted new construction techniques, used new materials, and uniquely combined existing techniques with creative design to produce…
In the fifth century B.C, during the time of Athens’s Golden Age, Greek culture flourished. Throughout the Golden Age, the Ancient Greeks developed key concepts that lead to their cultural and intellectual advancement. These concepts that stemmed from the development of the Greeks city states have not changed from time; in fact, they are still linked to today’s Western Tradition. The major principles of Ancient Greek and Athenian culture that show that we are a Hellenistic people include advancements in the arts, the sciences, and in politics.…
Everything from the construction of their buildings to the way they played games has influenced our culture today. The travesty, though, is that we commonly fail to realize the extent these ancient people have modeled and molded our society today. There are many ways in which our culture would not be the same without the Roman influence.…
Greek civilization, in many ways, was the most advanced population of it's time. The Greeks have created a great stir in modern day values, events, and philosophy, and they were just getting warmed up. The question, "What did the Greeks contribute to modern society", was posed, and I will begin to answer. The Greeks created a vast religious system, filled with heroes, gods, villains, monsters, and more. This has fascinated us, and has even influenced some of our brands of clothing, Nike for example (Nike being the goddess of victory). Speaking of Nike, the Olympic games were held in celebration of her, and was often seen as the main event. She was held in the hand of the statue of Athena during the games, and the olive wreaths were actually…

The Greek Civilization lasted from 1900 – 133 BC, but the affect it had on the Western world is still here today. As Greeks conquered other empires and build more and more territory for them, they spread and received their ideas from other cultures. During these times, the Greeks made many long lasting contributions in the areas of art, architecture, philosophy, math, drama, government, medicine, and science. This is why many of the foundations of Western civilization can be traced back to the ancient Greeks. The sharing of their ideas, inventions, and contributions had a massive influence on the future of many civilizations.…
After the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C.E, the Greek empire was divided. The control of Palestine was given to Greek leaders located in both Syria and Egypt. For about one hundred years, most of Israel was ruled by the Greeks in Egypt. Even though Greek Influence was noticed across Palestine (especially in Galilee), the Jews were generally allowed to coordinate their internal affairs without any interference from Greek authorities.…
A myth is a story that is told by people from an earlier time period. They explain what they think to be happening or how they view the world at that point in time. Many of them focus on gods, goddesses, or a mythical creature in order to explain the events that define their culture. The most common myths are within Greek mythology that help to explain culture and gave the world around them a meaning. These were an important part of their everyday life and help to explain religious practices and help influence art and literature years after its…
Their Philosophy has continued and served as the starting point for most of our reasoning, their Mathematics was revolutionary and advanced for its time and is still practiced by mathematicians worldwide (non-euclidean mathematics was critical for Einstein and his greatest scientific discovery). Their artwork still inspires many artists today, and their architecture clearly has impacted our society given its prevalence in some of our most famous buildings. Even though most of their science has become outdated, important discoveries like the circumference of the Earth and it not being flat were discovered early on by the Greeks. This alone shows their rationality and how similar they are to us today in the way of inquiry towards the Universe, their impact was humongous and should always be…
Yesterday, I attended my nephew’s 7th birthday party. The theme of his party was superheroes, and was amazed at all the children running around in their superhero costumes, acting as superheroes. This got me thinking on how superhero play is one of the most controversial forms of childhood play, as some people believe it stimulates aggression and violence and creates disruptive behavior. However, modern research points out and identifies how important superheroes are, not only to children, but to adults alike.…
