Ancient Egyptian Religion Ancient Egyptian society revolved nearly completely around religion. The most worshipped god was the supreme god Amun-Ra (can also be spelled as Amun-Re) It was believed that he had created all the gods, and heaven and earth. He is usually depicted as a man either standing or seated on a throne wearing a crown with the sun disk. Ra was also worshipped as the creator of gods and men. Every day when the sun set, Egyptians believed that he would go to war with Apepi, the serpent god, and fight through the night till the sun would rise with Ra’s triumph. He is depicted as a man with the head of a falcon wearing the sun disk and Uraeus on his head. Ra’s daughter Maat signified law, order, and truth. She always appears in human form, sitting down with a feather on her head signifying an emblem of truth. Osiris was the god of the Nile. He was murdered by his brother Set. Isis, his wife brought him back to life, but he stayed in the underworld to serve as god of the underworld and judge of the dead, and because of this there are many Osiris statues in tombs. Many prayers were made to him during the mummification process. Osiris is depicted as a mummy wearing a crown with feathers and a royal cobra. His arms are positioned one above the other and he holds a crook in one hand and a flail in the other. Egyptians believed that when you died your heart would be weighed against a feather, a meeting which Anubis presided over. If you had been good, and Osiris found your heart light, then you would be permitted into the afterlife. If Osiris deemed you as a heavy-hearted person, then your soul would be swallowed by a monster. Anubis was the god of cemeteries and embalming. Figures of Anubis are almost always placed in tombs. His sacred animal was the jackal. Nephthys was sister to Isis and guardian of the dead. Often times her figurines would be found in tombs. She is shown as a woman with wings spread wide to signify her all-embracing
