Segmented essays – sometimes called collage essays or disjunctive essays or paratactic essays – depend on space, usually expressed as numbers or rows of asterisks or squiggly lines or white breaks in text, as a fundamental element of design and expression. Knowing what the spaces say is vital for understanding the nonfictionist’s craft and appreciating the possibilities of this contemporary form; it also helps us to better understand the nature of truth in the segmented essay. Like musical compositions, nonfiction need not to be one uninterrupted melody, one movement, but can also be the arrangement of distinct and discrete miniatures, changes of temp, sonority, melody, separated by silences.…

I overheard from the Newark Board of Education that they were going to let the computers check the student's essay. My opponent greatly feels that it is a good idea to let computers check the student's homework. In my understanding, letting computers grade the essay is a bad idea. That is because not all computers are able to read the student's handwriting. Another reason is because so computers can make mistakes. Also, do to the fact that not everyone is able to afford computers for laptops. This is reasons why computers shouldn't be allowed to grade students essays.…
Writing a gripping and effective college essay is vital to most high school seniors that are applying to college. A college essay is a personal narrative that is read by college admission officers so that a college can get a better sense at who applicants are as a person. College essays are essential to setting applicants apart, so choosing an interesting a well-developed subject is key. In my experience, finding the narrative that I wanted to share was quite simple. I knew that the experience that taught me the most in my life was living with my ill grandfather and dealing with assimilation into my nuclear family. As well, during the time that I was writing my first draft, all my issues and the lessons that I was learning from them were still quite fresh. So, in a sense, it was easier to write since I knew exactly how I felt about it all…
Up until I was in fifth grade, I absolutely loathed reading. I thought it was monotonous, useless, and troublesome. I actually hated it so much that I avoided reading new material for years, and instead used Judy Moody Predicts the Future by Megan McDonald for three separate books reports. Unfortunately, that book helped me from having to branch out from my unadventurous, very selective book choices, but it also set a tone for what genre of reading I would continue my preteen years. These books were generally childish, composed of sci-fi or fantasy stories rather than stories layered with depth and societal complexity. And the epitome of my preteen reading years was the book that made me love reading in the first place; Maximum Ride. This book by James Patterson was the first “young-adult” book I’d ever read, and it transported me to a new and thrilling world; one with winged children, bloodthirsty wolf-hybrids, and action scenes upon action scenes. It was the first time of many that I would completely…
Process essays are essays that explain to the audience how to do something or how to complete a task. This may involve explaining how to put items or ingredients together to make a finished product, such as in a recipe. These essays can also explain how to accomplish a goal. For example, a process essay could detail the steps that must be taken in order to graduate from a particular college. Regardless of the subject, all process essays must clearly explain in detail how to complete or perform a task.…
The strongest piece of writing that I have done this quarter is my “Informative Essay” on truth about organic foods. There are many areas in this essay which makes me feel that this essay deems to be my best essay so far. Firstly, the outline and organization of my essay was apt for an Informative Essay, I had devoted the first paragraph for Introduction which had the summary of the information I wanted to present. The last paragraph had the Conclusion which wrapped up all the information provided in the essay and gave people a food for thought. Other paragraphs included the body of the Essay. Secondly, I had researched all the facts presented in the essay and verified that I had not made any assumptions, offensive statements or contradictions in my Essay. Finally, as a narrator I was careful not to include my own views or suggestions to diminish the facts presented in my Essay. I had learned to be a good writer from completing the assignment essays. I also learnt about the pre-writing invention strategies used for writing. I learned how to summarize, paraphrase, quote and cite by reading different passages. Now I am able to write reflective essays and peer-review essays of my friends. Brainstorming with my teacher and friends helped me to…

Criterion contains two complementary applications that are based on natural language processing (NLP) methods. The scoring application, e-rater®, extracts linguisticallybased features from an essay and uses a statistical model of how these features are related to overall writing quality to assign a holistic score to the essay. The second application, Critique, is comprised of a suite of programs that evaluate and provide feedback for errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics, identify the essay’s discourse structure, and recognize undesirable stylistic features. See Appendices for sample evaluations and feedback.…
