Analyzing Laura Wattenberg's 'The Name Wizard'
A. Main Point #1: First, you need to think about how the name sounds when hearing it aloud.
i. Sub-point sentence: In order to avoid any questions, when deciding on a name, think about your child’s point of view and imagine how he or she will have to live with it throughout their life.
 Supporting material: Laura Wattenberg, a writer, researcher, and software designer, wrote in her 2013 book, The Baby Name Wizard, “we may see baby naming as an opportunity for personal expression. Use whatever criteria you like to narrow your name choices, but give the name this final test: if you were starting life today, knowing everything you know about this world, is this the name you would want to represent you?” Wattenberg describes how it does not matter the process of picking the babies name, but before you make it official, you should question whether if you would be okay with being called that. ii. Sub-point sentence: As your child gets older, the name will reflect on him or her.
 Supporting material: The bestselling baby-naming experts, Satran and Rosenkrantz, wrote in their 2007 book, The Baby Name Bible, how “it’s important to keep in mind that your child is the one who’s going to live with your name choice- not just when he’s a baby, but in job interviews. Would you like to have a name that leaves people in doubt whether you are a woman or a man?” Tavakol clarifies how using certain unisex names can cause chaos for other children and adults because nearly everyone is used to gender specific names. Chapter 6 of this book talks about whether or not the name that a parent give their child matters. Levitt provides an example about a New York City man who was named Robert Lane, he named his first son Winner and then named his next son Loser. Despite what his name suggests, Loser Lane succeeded in life, moving up in the NYPD. Winner Lane however, has been arrested nearly thirty six times. He tells a story of a woman who named her daughter Temptress, meaning to name her Tempest, the girl went on to do things like inviting men over while her mother was at work. After we are born, we receive our own names. Names are chosen not by themselves, but by their family member’s. That is the first gift the baby owns and of course, it is free, but not everybody takes the free gift if they don't like it. Just like me and the girl I had read about in the article, “My Name," by Sandra Cisneros. We both don’t like our names because our names are not English names; indeed, it’s the different culture name.…

I find it interesting that young women took their husband's last names. "While young women freely referred to themselves as Ms, they said they were more likely to take their husband's names after they married than their older sisters had been (Collins 331). " This is totally unfair why do men still get superiority. Women and men should both have equal opportunity to use their last names. Women were treated unequally in everything from the workplace, sports, and school. Women can be just as successfulas males therefore it doesn't make sense how they are always held above women.…

I was supposed to be named Rachel. It was a compromise, my mother told me, from what my dad had picked: Raquel. Growing up, I had a friend named Rachel that was nothing like me: soft, composed, and the sweetest smile. As it is hebrew, the name comes from the biblical name meaning “O Beautiful One” or “female sheep”. While this is nice and all, it was much more fitting for my friend. Never could or would I pick the animal the sheep to describe myself.…

“Andrew, Drew, or Andy?” I hear that question everywhere I go. At birth I was given the name Andrew Garby, but people call me a variety of names. Most people refer to me as “Andrew” or “Drew”, but I have some call me “Andy” because I find it funny when people fight over what I want to be called. Truthfully, I never really thought that a name could reflect who a person is; so which name or names really fit me the best: Andrew, Drew, or Andy?…

My name comes from a small tribe in Nigeria. It means alert is the language. My father was born in Africa where the name is heard more frequently. My mother travelled out there with my dad and picked a name for their child. There were many names to choose from, so they picked the one that everyone will mispronounce when they get back into the states. Over the years I acquired many different nicknames one of which I am still using. Some of my favorites have to be Vesh or V. There are many that I dislike though such as Veshy, Vegetable, VuVu, or Vagina. Saying my name isn't one of the easiest words on the planet. People always get a look before there about to say my name for the first time; I always know when I'm up. They always say something like, "I'm sorry if I'm going to mispronounce this, but is it Vershima?" With a name like this you have to be open to a lot of correcting. I feel like my name is very unique and that I am one in a million people to have in the Untied States. My name has always been very long for me to write. I have never enjoyed writing the whole thing out on paper. My name has gotten me into very different situations. I have received various letters from organizations such as, Miss America pageant, women's soccer, and also a free tampon in the mail. I think my name can also be a ghetto black girls name if it wanted to be. When I say it not that much comes to mind except that I could be getting in trouble cause only my mom or dad call me by my whole name. Influence with my name made me get a nick name because it is so hard for people to pronounce. Every time I have to correct someone and you always get tired of that situation. My name is very unique, especially with my unique personality. I would never change it because then that wouldn't be me. In some odd case that my name must be forbidden to say, I would change it to Daniel, which is my middle name. The children I have will probably not have as extravagant names as me.…

Names are one of the most important qualities a person retains during their life on earth, and their time in society. The way a person’s name originates, usually has unique story of how it originated. After living in society for a couple years, people may attain nicknames.
