Analyzing Jose's Transfer Story '
Before Jose began his transfer story, Glenn and Sebastian facilitated a discussion about Professor Almeida's colloquium. As a class, we really dug deep about how we felt about technology and its effects on society both today and in the future. Beatrice made a good point about the way technology is used today especially through social media. She stated that we shouldn't fear technology if we use it to show the world who our true selves are. She mentioned that people often make up a fake persona behind their social media page and this is not who they really are in person. I somewhat agree with this statement because if you want to use technology, you have to use it the right way and be honest about who you really are. Only then will you be able

Chapter 13 of They Say I Say by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein analyze the ongoing, controversial topic of social media/ technology. The authors organize both sides of the topic by going back and forth and giving different view points. The two sides of the argument are one, that technology and social media "fries our brain" and makes person to person communication more of a problem than what it used to be. On side two, we hear that technology actually brings us together and gives us immense amounts of information that we never had access to before. "You may have heard parents and journalists complain that smartphones, iPads, and other electronic devices that seem almost wired into our brains are destroying our ability to think, communicate,…

Bright screens with backlighting, noisy keyboards, quiet touch pads, swiping to turn the page, all great examples of futuristic technologies; books were at one point a futuristic technology, but now they're a thing of the past. What happened? Swiping became easier than turning; backlighting in screens became easier than managing a book light; typing became easier than written annotations. In Alan Carr's novel, The Shallows (2011), he writes, "The price we pay to assume technology's power is alienation," (Carr 211). What Carr doesn’t mention is the high taxes we pay in addition to the price of alienation.…

    Our Future Selves Analysis

In the essay “Our Future Selves,” by Eric Schmitz and Jared Cohen, the authors focus solely on how technology has had an optimistic impact on our lives and society. Similarly, the more technology advances are available the more effective, productive, and creative an individual will become, therefore, making an individual feel more connected and equal. However, in his essay “The Loneliness of the Interconnected,” Charles Seife introduces and proposes an opposing view. Seife believes that the more technology offers us, the more isolated we become towards our surroundings. Due to the abusive use of technology, we have become isolated to reality, to opposing views, but most of all towards verbal communication. Thus, although these two essays demonstrate distinctive views on technology, they share three common views: Technology is creating equality, optimism, and simplicity.…

Technology over the years have improved in drastic ways over the centuries and are getting more involved in our daily lives some in good ways but some are bad. Technology has cut off the way humans interact and speak distracting them from doing basic things like talking, cutting off any social interactions hiding behind a screen. People stop talking to their families, when they do talk they feel very uncomfortable and out of place. Ray Bradbury shows examples of technology getting in the way in his book Fahrenheit 451. Ray shows the readers how the power of technology does affect people in many ways in his book how it suppresses and replaces true human interaction.…

Between both Deresiewicz and Gorry they both argue about how humans today are attracted to technology. In Deresiewicz’s essay he explains how technology is ruining people’s lives because they are use to having technology on them. Many people have technology at their fingertips. People use technology for everything even to ask why the sky is blue. He also talks about how technology can have its benefits. Many people look up long distance friendships on places like Facebook. Some people might talk to someone overseas or in a different country using technology. Deresiewicz says technology has been turning us into machines, just like Gorry says in his essay. During Gorry’s essay he examines how the technology ruins how people have a face-to-face conversation. Instead of talking to someone face-to-face people can always text others to avoid that face-to-face conversation. Gorry also has a part in his essay when he says that technology is eating away books. If a person ever wanted a book they could go online to get it. The internet knows everything, from math homework to what is happening in the world this very second. Still, after many years to come the next generation will be based off technology.…

In todays society it seems as if everybody is connected to social media somehow, especially us college students and young adults. It’s a way for us to connect with friends far away or even nearby. Texting, emailing, tweeting, and facebooking have become the preferred forms of communication for many young adults in the past 10 years and shows no signs of slowing down. We’re now in a society where interacting online has become the social norm. You’re probably more likely to speak to friends and family through electronic devices…

Individuals who use the Internet have to realize that they must be responsible and protect their own privacy. What goes up on the Internet will be around the world in just seconds. Galai just posted a photo of his face on the Internet not knowing about the consequences that picture would have. Singer asks himself, “New technology has made greater openness possible, but has this openness made us better off?” (Singer 463). Singer makes a good point about technology, because “new technology” has made the world improve by making it simple, but it has made it less private and dangerous because people do not understand their limits. Kadish says “The image had rippled outward in all directions, passing straight through national barriers” (Kadish…
