The Ben Jonson was a European poet and actor in 17th centaury. In his lifetime, he wrote many poems including the lyrics “Still to Be Neat” which was published in early 1609. Since that time, it published in different collections of poems or other pieces of writing. In contrast to the poet of “Girl Powdering Her Keck” is an Asian American poet in the 19th century. She wrote it in 1983. However, it is about Japanese art in the 18th century, which is called ukiyo-e, by Kitagawa Utamaro, a Japanese painter. The painter creates this art is, because he carries out portraits of Japanese women in the 18th century in this art.…
In “Gentlemen, your verdict” by Michael Bruce, Lieutenant-Commander Oram should be convicted of murder for taking the lives of fifteen innocent men. Captain Oram was faced in a dilemma where he had to choose to either “condemn [his] whole crew to death or sacrifice fifteen and save five” (4).Choosing whether a person should die or live is a decision no one should make. In this case “a submarine [is] [laid] helpless[ly] at the bottom of the sea [with] ...twenty men-trapped”(1). The radio station reported that no ships were around and help would not come for a few days. Captain Oram made the decision to murder his crew with no hesitation, not to even analyzing his plan and find another solution. However, the oxygen tank could only last for two…

If you were Italian and somebody called you a “Wop”, what would you do? If it were me I would feel very angry and offended. In the essay “I Just Wanna Be Average” being called a “Wop” or being physically abused happened frequently. Written by Mike Rose, he shows us how badly he was treated by his teachers in high school.…
I chose the article “When Bs are Better,” written by Michael E. Gordon. The main purpose for this article was to state how the student’s teachers or professors are inflating grades in the higher education programs. It mentions within the article how majority of students are no longer working hard or are getting to be lazy due to the fact that some teachers or professors don’t give grades that are lesser than a B. This is a problem because students in America will ultimately become lax and not put forth the effort to participate or work hard in school. It is much easier for a student to sit by and get that B vice working hard for the A.…
In the book Nothing But The Truth by Avi, the protagonist, Philip Malloy, tells half-truths and lies to manipulate others. Philip, a ninth grader at Harrison High School, had only intended to get out of his least favorite teacher’s classes. When Philip gets into trouble you will find that instead of admitting to his mistakes or apologizing he insists that he is right and takes the easy way out of the situation. Philip has many motives for telling these lies to different people. Philip Malloy’s lies and half-truths will undoubtedly get him into a great deal of trouble.…
Who ever said being street smart but not book smart was a bad thing? In his short essay “Hidden Intellectualism” written in 2003 Gerald Graff talks about what people call book smart (Intellectualism) can hide into what one calls “Street Smart”(Hidden Intellectualism). Graff argues about how teachers are going the wrong way on how they should do their job, stating that they can use this to their advantage by using topics that such individuals are interested in whether it’s clothing, sports or even video games to educate them. The essay was illuminating and persuasive at convincing it’s readers because of the ethos, well written counterclaim and purpose. If topics such…
In Peter Elbow’s essay, he proposes two games that people used to organise their thinking. Students are taught to “think critically”, but Elbow suggests harnessing the Doubting and Believing game methods instead. Critical thinking is when a student's uses the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue to form a judgment, but teachers have a difficult time directing their students to think this way. Furthermore, this is exactly the reason why Elbow suggest using different methods. These methods used in the Doubling and Believing method build on the natural thought process of humans. Instead of just analyzing and solving, these methods encourage students to question the answer and converse with others. The doubting game focuses on seeking…
There are times when people are put in the position in which they must choose between being selfless and helping others or not doing anything and only worrying about themselves. If the people choose to disregard their own safety and put another person’s life before theirs, it shows how ethically responsible they are. For an action to be ethically responsible, it must be done out of someone’s own intention to ensure the wellbeing of someone else. Ethical responsibility is defined as the obligation to do something that is morally sound in order to make sure a person is in good physical and emotional health. In the article titled, “Can the Law Make Us Be Decent?,” written by Jay Sterling Silver, the author states that there is not a federal…
1. What is doublespeak and how may it be used to cloud our thinking? How does doublespeak stop short of lying? According to Professor Lutz, how are words used to manipulate reality? The presenter suggests in closing that doublespeak while it can be harmless and amusing at times, can threaten our basic democratic selves. What do you think? Why?…
In reality, people are able to be ethically responsible instantaneously at hand through their capability in doing so. People act ethically responsible when one is in need of assistance because their they let their sympathetic feelings of compassion take over their intentions. Ethical responsibility is a duty or obligation to ensure the individual’s well-being through specific commitments such as saving someone from tragedy. One piece of text that revolves around people having the capacity in demonstrating sudden acts of ethical responsibility is “Can the Law Make Us Be Decent” by Jay Sterling Silver. Though many may argue that Silver’s argument is invalid, most will agree that his argument is in fact agreeable because the emotions of one…
The author, Stuart Green, makes a few interesting points in the text, Argument as Conversation: The Role of Inquiry in Writing a Researched Argument. Stuart Green described arguments as conversations. They contain an issue and many viewpoints on the specified situation of the issue. He mentioned the conversations we have are never new; they’ve been discussed before and they will be discussed after you leave the conversation. Also, you, as a reader, need to find out about the ideas said about your specific conversation in the past in order for you to branch out your own idea about the conversation. Stuart Green discussed about framing. He defined framing as “a metaphor for describing the lens, or perspective, from which writers present their…
“an air of profundity, authority, and prestige” (10). Those who use gobbledygook or bureaucratese are bent on “overwhelming the audience…
The words and expressions such as “object of ridicule and contempt”, “lampooned”, “moral turpitude”, “outed”, “frequency and urgency”, “a fat slob”, “a blimp”, “to be mocked” make the author’s point powerfully.…
In the debate over whether bullshit is worse than lying the opponents argue that bullshit is not worse lying because Frankfurt’s argument was not strong enough and thereby give numerous examples as to why bullshit is not worse than lies are. On the other side of the debate the supporters argue that bullshitting is worse than lying because the person committing the act of bullshitting does not have to have any ties or respect to what the truth is or is not as opposed to lying where the liar knows exactly what the truth is and therefore must pay respect to the truth. In this essay, I will argue that bullshitting is worse than lying and should therefore be a less tolerated than lying.…
