BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

With economies around the world on the verge of collapsing. Some are pointing to the IMF as a potential saviour of the world economy. They argue that the IMF can play a key role in avoiding financial crisis and restoring confidence to a battered international economy. Yet, at the same time many view the IMF with disdain, arguing that their intervention causes more problems than it solves.

What does the IMF actually do? and Why is its role so Controversial.
The IMF was founded in 1944, to facilitate the post war economic recovery. In particular the IMF was to play a role in stabilising exchange rates and balance of payments, whilst its sister organisation the World Bank would provide loans for long term development. These days the IMF plays a role in:

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group are two global institutions created to assist nations in becoming and remaining economically viable. Each plays an imporant role in the environment of international trade by helping maintain stability in the financial markets and by assisting countries that are seeking economic development and restructuring. Inadequate monetary reserves and unstable currencies are particularly vexing problems in global trade. So long as these conditions exist, world markets cannot develop and function as effectively as they should. To overcome these particular market barriers that plagued international trading before World War II, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was formed. Originally 29 countries signed the agreement; now 184 countries are members. Among the objectives of the IMF are the stabilization of foreign exchange rates and the establishment of freely convertible currencies to facilitate the expansion and balanced growth of international trade. Member countries have voluntarily joined to consult with one another to maintain a stable system of buying and selling their currencies so that payments in oreign money can take place between countries smoothly and without delay. The IMF also lends money to members having trouble meeting financial obligations to other members. Argentina, Turkey, and Greece have recently received such help from the IMF, but the results have been mixed.…

A quick over view of how the WTO, IMF and the World Bank started and operate. Post World War II, many countries looked to rebuild the financial structure of the global economy without losing their power in the economy. The three organizations each share a common goal of international policies. The IMF was created to maintain global monetary cooperation and stability by making loans to countries with balance of payment problems, stabilizing exchange rates and stimulating growth and employment, the WTO deals with international trade, both formalizing trade and settling disputes between countries, and the World Bank has steadily increased its original mandate of providing long term loans for reconstruction, to funding multimillion dollar infrastructure projects in developing countries.…

is an international organization. It is responsible for managing the global financial system and for providing loans to its member states to help alleviate economic problems. WHAT IS IMF?It is an organization of 188 countries ,working to foster global monetary cooperation , secure financial stability ,facilitate international trade ,promote high employment and sustainable economic growth and reduce poverty” .The IMF is the most detailed attempt to organize the conduct of international monetary affairs.Agreement for its creation came at the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference in Bretton Woods[?], New Hampshire, USA, in 1944; the organisation came into existence in 1946, as part of a post-WWII reconstruction plan, and began financial operations on March 1, 1947. Accordingly, it is sometimes referred to as "a Bretton Woods institution", along with the Bank for International Settlements and the World Bank. Together, these three institutions define the monetary policy shared by almost all countries with market economies. In order to gain access to IMF loans, BIS privilege, and strategic World Bank development loans, a country must normally agree to terms set forth by all three organizations. The IMF describes itself as “an organization of 188 countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world.”…

The International Monetary Fund The is an association of 187 countries, employed to foster global monetary collaboration, secure financial stability, facilitate global trade, encourage high percentages of employment, reach for economic growth between many different nations, and reduce poverty around the world, without discriminating against different countries. Many critics believe this establishment to be positive for the many responsibilities they take care of. For example the International Monetary Fund will provide assistance in areas including giving training and technology to developing countries to help with their own economic structure so they can work on their own eventually. IMF works closely with many different nations and the members included and are involved in the media daily. With all of these positive aspects the IMF seems to do, there is speculation they do not do the best to their ability in helping other nations. For example, they are selective in only having certain nations with a lot of finances in their group, where developing countries are discouraged from joining. Critics argue the IMF does not pay enough attention to countries that are needed help with their finances, but rather they will work on operations that…

Why are the IMF, WTO and world bank called ‘The Unholy Trinity’. Apart from a positive side, there is also a negative impact of these organizations for which they are called the “The Unholy Trinity’. That is because as the loans are given to the countries, more loans are wanted and it has turned into an addiction. This becomes a burden on country’s economy when they need to repay. This may once again burst out at any time in future as one more great depression that occurred in 1929. Overall, it is difficult to decide whether the economies gained or lost. It depends on whether the gap between rich countries and poor countries is shrinking or not. Let us hope that ‘The unholy Trinity’ will not pull the world economies into a vicious…

After 55 years of existence there are strongly conflicting views on the importance and role of the IMF for today’s international economy, and on its effectiveness. On the one hand there are those who see the Fund as having adapted well to the changing world environment with perhaps the need for some reforms to the International Architecture.[1] On the other hand are those who believe that its useful time has passed in the environment of exchange rate flexibility and open capital markets.[2] These radically conflicting views require the need for a balanced perspective on the role and performance of the IMF within the context of its historical evolution.…

It is in this specific instance that the IMF functions as the economic weapon under the rubric of European supremacy to destabilize and/or overthrow Third World governments that are perceived as being anti-American. The IMF achieves this goal through the imposition of harsh, draconian "conditionality measures" it imposes on these countries when they apply for assistance to solve their balance of payments problems.…

International Monetary Fund is an organization that consists of 188 countries, in which countries work together to promote global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, and sustainable economic growth around the globe. IMF serves as an international bank, loaning money to member countries due to economic difficulties; and as an adjudicator, reconciling economic conflicts between countries. It’s a pool of central bank reserves and national currencies that allows member countries to borrow. China joined IMF in 1945, and has twice used IMF credits, in 1981 and in 1986. China holds annual consultations with IMF on economic development and policy issues. In recent number of years, China has been accused of currency manipulation and excessive foreign reserves to underpin economic growth. It has been an issue of concern of IMF, and it has warned China and forced China to make policy reforms. In this paper, I will begin with China’s monetary system, 1994 monetary crisis, and then discuss China’s current monetary policies, reforms, and IMF’s regulation on China.…
