My weekly wonder is about the actress and environmentalist Shailene Woodley. Earlier in October, Woodley was arrested for trespassing and protesting against a planned oil pipeline. Because of this and her passion for the environment, Woodley was honored by the Environmental Media Association. Woodley gave a speech that persuades people to “Live a more compassionate life, because the ripple effect of that is what is going to save our oceans, our planet, and our race.” After the speech, Nikki Reed stated, “I love what she stands for. I hope she brings some much needed attention to what is going on right now.”…

The short Essay, An Experiment in Criticism, by C.S. Lewis brings to light many new perspectives to how people read and experience literature. Throughout the essay Lewis works to give the message that; how good a book is doesn’t depend on the quality of writing but on the reader. He begins by defining two types of readers- the “literary” and the “non-literary”- which he uses through the rest of his essay to categorize different traits for treating literature.…

During the text ‘Year of Wonders’ knowledge, isolation and ignorance is a major factor, highlighted throughout the understanding of many different characters. Most of these factors are a result of the important and life-taken religion, which cause characters for example, Sam and his deserted and lonely life in the mineshaft where he worked and died, ‘Sam’s world was a dark, damp maze of rakes and scrins thirty feet under the ground… His whole life was confined by these things.’. People are limited to what they want to discover as the plague and their religion prohibit them from being rebellious. ‘Like most in this village, I had no occasion to travel father than the market town seven miles distant.’ Anna Frith notifies the reader how no one…

Harry Thurston’s “Miracle” is a simple and sweet poem, which displays the usage of an extended metaphor. As the speaker is in the process of explaining to his daughter as to why she should not pick the blossom and allow it to grow, he soon regrets telling her to stop. If Thurston meant to metaphorically convey this poem as the growth of his daughter, we can safely assume that the blossom mentioned in the second line of the poem that will “turn into a strawberry” (4), represents his daughter as a toddler who will soon grow up into a beautiful young lady. From “no sooner are the words out than I regret forestalling her pleasure” (7-8), we can also assume that he regretted holding her back from her own curiosities and discoveries, his fatherly instincts to nurture and care for his daughter while she is still young could be the cause of this; it would have been his way of protecting her. It also suggests that he came to the realization that he needed to allow her to experience everything on her own and let her grow. “For what is one blossom less, and weeks to a child too long to wait” (9-10), suggests that there would have been no harm done if she were to pick a single blossom but her childhood would have been in a way harmed from not being able to satisfy her curiosity and learning from her own experiences. He realizes that as a parent, he doesn’t need to protect or teach her everything because she will eventually learn on her own. I feel as if this poem is a reminder to us that life is in a sense a “miracle” (15). It is hard to believe that something so small such as a blossom can grow into something so different such as a sweet strawberry or a toddler growing up into something new such as an adult until we see it…

When one thinks of meaningful work, generally, they think of labor that accomplishes a certain goal. One thinks of a prestigious job or occupation that has meaning to it, but meaningful work can mean a lot more than just a prestigious job or having meaning to something you do. Meaningful work can be defined as enjoyment of the worker, dedication of the worker to the job, and involvement that the worker shows toward his or her job. In “The Physical Genius” written by Malcolm Gladwell, he talks about how to become a Physical Genius. Gladwell is an English-born Canadian journalist, author, and speaker. He has written many books and articles in sociology, psychology, and social psychology. People who have experienced the meaningful work, can be…

Often the mystic is not aware, at least initially, of the revolutionary quality of his vision and interpretation. The nature of his experience, incommunicable, indistinct, defies translation, unlike that of a prophet, who conveys a clear message. The unio mystica is a profoundly personal emotion, but once felt it can no longer be forgotten or denied. To the outsider, however, the result of this radical transformation appears akin to madness. The mystic claims to be above authority, he seeks to establish his own system based on this revelation. (Lamont 130-31)…

    Essay on Wonder Woman

    • 1468 Words

Her mission is to bring love, peace, and sexual equality to a world torn by the hatred of men. The heroine Princess Diana of Themyscira, more famously known as Wonder Woman, has gone through various reimagining and different retellings in both media and comic books. But all of these have the same basic origin. She was born and lived the majority of her life on the isolated paradise island of Themyscira, an island inhabited entirely of Amazonian women. Everything changed one day when pilot, Captain Steve Trevor crashed on the mysterious island. Soon after he crashed, as he was being held and treated on the island, Queen Hippilyta held a tournament to decide who would have the honor of escorting Captain Trevor back to the United States. Against her mother’s wishes, Princess Diana participated in said tournament and won. At this point the narrative diverges depending on its retelling. In the 1975 pilot, set in World War II, named, The New Original Wonder Woman directed by Leonard Horn, Wonder Woman fights Nazis during the World War II era soon after leaving the island. In the 2009 animated movie, Wonder Woman, directed by Lauren Montgomery, Wonder Woman fights to stop the reign of the Greek god of war, Ares and his army of undead Amazons. Wonder Woman has always been widely considered as a feminist icon, thus these movies are supposed to reflect such a message. Thus each movie shows how the times and sexual equality has changed over the years. These can be shown by the relationship between Princess Diana and Steve Trevor in which one movie portrays them fighting on equal footing against a common threat much like co-workers and the other not so much which is apparent in a multitude of fighting scenes; Wonder Woman’s behavior and personality through both movies but mostly with her passive behavior in one fight scene in the 1975 pilot and her aggressive behavior in the 2009 animated movie; and Steve Trevor’s difference in behavior and personality but…

The late 1600s bridged a time in the New World where religion was highly valued and superstitions, established from a previous time, ran rampant. Over several centuries ago, from the 1300s-1600s, England was experiencing its own type of witchcraft craze as it went through the process of executing thousands of people for their supposed misdeeds. After putting into place, appealing, reformatting and reenacting various acts all of which, in their own manner, banned supernatural acts and resulted in the death of many, England had finally seemed to move past this elongated obsession, just in time to pass it onto their fellow Englishmen in the New World. Due to the past exposures of hysteria and the already traumatic events occurring in the area,…
