Analysis of the Poem “Because I could not stop for death”
There Will Come Soft Rains

The short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” from “The Martian Chronicles” written by Ray Bradbury after the second world war deals with a futuristic house which is uninhabited due to a nuclear catastrophe and completely controlled by a computer so that everything works fully automatically. Furthermore it is about uncontrollable nature which cuts its own path - no matter whether there is mankind any longer - and causes a fire to break out which destroys the house completely.

The story begins with the introduction of the computer controlled house that cooks for the residents and cleans itself, and a corresponding voice clock which informs the non-existent inhabitants about date, time and ordinary events like birthdays, anniversaries or what they have to do during the course of the day. The happenings take place between the 4th and the 5th of August 2026 in the city of Allendale, California. On the morning of 4th August the house which is the only one left standing in a ruined city starts to do some daily tasks as it prepares breakfast, does the dishes and sends out tiny robot mice as cleaning animals. At the house’s west face everything is burnt black except for five places which illustrate silhouettes of a man and a woman doing some gardening work and two children playing with a ball. At noon the family’s bony dog enters the house and dies of starvation after he recognizes that there is no one left who cares about him anymore. After dinner time the house automatically reads out Mrs. McClellan’s favorite poem by Sara Teasdale which is about the fact that nature goes on no matter what has happened or whether mankind exists any longer. In the evening at ten o’clock a tree bough falls into the kitchen where a fire is burning on the stone hearth and causes a blaze which destroys the house utterly. The house tries to save itself while it shuts all the doors and sprinkles water from the ceilings but fails for the reason that the fire

Apparently, due to a nuclear blast, “the house stood alone in a city of rubble and ashes. This was the one house left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles.” The author uses personification to develop the house as being the main character. He writes that the house “quivered at each sound” leading us to believe that the house is alive. This use of personification can be seen throughout the story as the house runs its daily course. “Tick-tock, seven o’clock, time to get up…” “Seven-nine, breakfast time, seven-nine!” These are examples of the house being independently programmed to not need a human. The house didn’t require humans in order for it to function, as a matter of it, the house didn’t seem to notice that the humans were gone. Furthermore, despite all the capabilities of the house, it was still unable to save the family from the nuclear bomb.…

In the poem Sympathy for the devil, the speaker uses many different historical allusions and understatements to gain the readers sympathy for him. The speaker of the poem is the Devil and he tries to make it sound as though he is forced to be around all of the death and despair so that the reader might feel bad for him. He uses the historical allusion of “I was around when Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain” to show that he has been around for a very long time and he has seen some of the most sorrowful deaths in history. The speaker tries to make the reader feel sorry for him because he has seen so much death. Throughout the poem he makes it very clear that he himself did not murder or cause any of the deaths that he talks about by making the understatements “I was round when” and “I watched “. Those kind of understatements show that he was not the reason for the deaths even though he was there when they occurred and therefore he should not be to blame but in fact he wants remorse. The biggest understatement that the speaker use is the second to last stanza when he list the contradictions “Just as every cop is a criminal, And all the sinners saints, As heads is Tails”. In that stanza he tries to show that people should not be judged for what they see or are around because no one is perfect. The best way that he attempted to elicit sympathy for himself is by being polite by saying “Please allow” and “Let me please”. Him being polite was probably his best chance to gain any kind of sympathy from the reader because usually if you are nice to a person they are generally nice to…

Ray Bradbury’s “There Will Come Soft Rains,” includes many different literary elements to depict August fifth of 2026 and quite literally gives life to a home that continues to care for a family that no longer lives there. Putting to use some of the same strategies directors of horror movies use today, Bradbury creates a haunting cautionary tale about the power of technology.…

By the end of the story, technology’s limitations become painfully clear, highlighting the importance of man in control. The quote “the dog, once huge and fleshy, but now gone to bone and covered with sores, moved in and through the house, tracking mud” (Pg. 89) shows that technology does not know to respond well and care for an animal, meaning that though technology can respond to human actions, animals however, are treated indifferently. Secondly, the quote “Cleaning solvent, bottled, shattered over the stove. The room was ablaze in an instant!”(Pg. 91) demonstrates the necessity for a human conscious because though the house was built to withstand hazards, without a conscious directing technology, in the end, the house will fail. Thirdly, the quote “The reserve water supply which had filled baths and washed dishes for many quiet days was gone”(Pg. 91) demonstrates the need for man when the reserve water supply runs out without a conscious being to refill it and then without refilling the water supply caused the entire house to burn down. Hence, though the house was…

The automated house prepares itself for the day, but its inhabitants have not responded to several wake up calls, breakfast, the weather box, or the waiting car. The robotic mice finish cleaning the house, and it is revealed that the family who lived in the house — two parents, a daughter and son — have died. They are now “five spots of paint” against a house covered with a “thin charcoal layer.” The city is in rubble and the “radioactive glow” emitted in the area indicates that an atomic blast has wiped out Allendale, if not the world.…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…

“There Will Come Soft Rains” is a short story by Ray Bradbury about the last house on an isolated block, its robotic features still functioning. In the end the house is destroyed by a tree falling which causes the house to catch fire which clearly shows nature has taken over. However “By the Waters of Babylon” written by Stephen Vincent Benet tells the story of a Priest’s son named John who while on a spiritual journey finds out that technology devastates humans.…
