Analysis Of Sue Klebold's Speech
In the video I watched, the speaker was Sue Klebold, the mother of one of the Columbine High School shooters. During the video, she discusses her struggles of the situation and what she has learned throughout her experience. She addresses the three challenges she faces when talking to a big group of people, and meeting strangers. She also talks about the toll the actions of her son has put on her. She also brings up a discussion about mental health and suicide and list facts others might not be aware of. The audience in this video seems relatively large. The purpose for her speaking is to address the situation and educate others on what it’s like to be the mother of someone who kills and hurts, and also being a mother of someone who commits suicide. Frequently she relies on facts to really show evidence about mental health. By using facts during her speech it makes it easier for the audience to understand, this also keeps the audience engaged. While there was no audience interaction, there was no need for it during this particular talk. One of the facts Sue uses is, “Only a very small percent of those who have a mental illness are violent toward other people, but of those who die by suicide, it's estimated that about 75 to maybe more than 90 percent have a diagnosable mental health condition of some kind.” After this, she states that she doesn’t believe her son’s violence was because he wanted to hurt others, but rather to hurt himself. She also talks about how she had no idea her son was having any of these problems, and a few years after the shooting she found where her son was writing about his internal struggles of wanting to end his life.
