PURPOSE
The purpose of this lab was to analyze the amount of silver in an alloy using quantitative and qualitative observations.

PROCEDURE 1. Prepare the Funnel and Filter Paper • Place the filter paper in the Buchner funnel, turn the water on and wet the filter paper with the acid wash. 2. Find the Mass of the Alloy • Find the mass of the empty beaker and then place the silver alloy in the beaker and weigh that. Subtract the mass of the beaker from the mass of the beaker with the alloy in it to get the mass of the sample. 3. Dissolve the Silver • Put the alloy in a beaker, put 10-mL of 6 M nitric acid in the beaker, place a watch glass on top of the beaker and place on the hot plate in the fume hood. 4. Precipitate the Silver • Find the necessary amount of sodium chloride to precipitate your silver and take the beaker out of the fume hood after cooling. Then, put a mixture of sodium chloride dissolved in distilled water and the dissolved alloy back into the fume hood to heat for 15 minutes on the hot plate. 5. Filter the Silver Chloride • Take the mixture from the fume hood and pour onto the filter paper in the funnel and drain the liquid while keeping the crystals on the filter paper. Use the acid wash to rinse out the beaker, making sure to get every particle. 6. Dry the Silver Chloride and Determine its Mass • Take the filter paper with the crystals out of the funnel and place on a watch glass. Label the wash glass and place on the tray dry before placing on balance to weigh. 7. Calculate the Percent Silver in the Alloy • From your data, determine the percent of silver in your sample.
