Analysis of "Planting a Sequoia"
Planting a Sequoia
All afternoon my brothers and I have worked in the orchard,
Digging this hole, laying you into it, carefully packing the soil.
Rain blackened the horizon, but cold winds kept it over the Pacific,
And the sky above us stayed the dull gray
Of an old year coming to an end.
In Sicily a father plants a tree to celebrate his first son’s birth–
An olive or a fig tree–a sign that the earth has one more life to bear.
I would have done the same, proudly laying new stock into my father’s orchard,
A green sapling rising among the twisted apple boughs,
A promise of new fruit in other autumns.
But today we kneel in the cold planting you, our native giant,
Defying the practical custom of our fathers,
Wrapping in your roots a lock of hair, a piece of an infant’s birth cord,
All that remains above earth of a first-born son,
A few stray atoms brought back to the elements.
We will give you what we can–our labor and our soil,
Water drawn from the earth when the skies fail,
Nights scented with the ocean fog, days softened by the circuit of bees.
We plant you in the corner of the grove, bathed in western light,
A slender shoot against the sunset.
And when our family is no more, all of his unborn brothers dead,
Every niece and nephew scattered, the house torn down,
His mother’s beauty ashes in the air,
I want you to stand among strangers, all young and ephemeral to you,
Silently keeping the secret of your birth.

I have to say that the poem “Planting a Sequoia” moved me the most for many reasons. The first line that hit me emotionally was line three and the “Rain blackened the horizon” draws you into how everyone is feeling inside as they had to bury child. The cold winds made me think of the day that I visited my mother’s grave after nineteen years and how I finally forgave her for not being able to

This article analysis Brown decision towards his journey into the forest. In the opening paragraphs one does not know the nature of the impending mysterious journey into the forest, but Hawthorne generates a great sense of urgency. The author reveals to the reader that this journey will be taken at sunset, but his wife Faith attempts to dissuade her husband. Furth more Brown disregards Faith wishes and goes on by saying, “of all nights in the year, this one night must I must tarry away from thee.” This gives a sense to the reader that Brown had already made up his mind towards the direction his journey will go.…

In the poem, The Wreck of the Hesperus, the man and his daughter both die during the disaster at sea. In my opinion, it was the most powerful because of the true relationship. When the storms started coming in, the father warned her that the wind was going to sweep her away. He gave her his seaman’s coat. He then found a broken pole and wrapped her with a rope and bounded her to the mast. As they went on, the weather and the water being so cold, froze the father to a corpse. The daughter then put her hands together and started praying. She prayed that someone would come save her. Through the night it began to sleet and snow. The wind that brought great damage to the boat made it swayed back and forth until it finally broke apart. The daughter wasn’t able to survive the crash. In the end, all that was left was a memory.…

The emotion of the poet is clearly described in both poems. “I resisted the impulse” and “I was brave, as I walked with you”. Both quotes from Poppies show that although the poet felt upset that her son was going to war, and that she felt he was too young, she allowed her son to do as he wanted. This shows realisation that he had grown up, that it wasn’t her decision to allow him to go and that she didn’t want to upset him by showing how she really felt. In The Falling Leaves, the poet describes her emotion through the weather. “like snowflakes wiping out the noon;” this shows that she was feeling saddened and upset from what she had seen.…

The initial impression gathered from the passage is bizarre and very dreamlike, perhaps chiefly because it is an excerpt from a novel or a larger literary work. Upon further analysis, the passage develops an eerily violent tone. The events appear to take place in the home of Dieter Bethge, during a stormy night while he is sleeping. Immediately the rain is described as falling with “sodden fury”, introducing the negative tone. Shortly after this description, Mrs. Hax adopts the persona of an animal stalking its prey. She “methodically trimmed the glass out of the frame” eerily without emotion, despite the fact that she is on her way to cause harm to Dieter, as what can further be assumed by her act of “comitt[ing] her injuries in advance to Bethge’s head”. The “atonal ringing” promotes the eerie feeling further. There is no pureness or musicality in atonal ringing; it is an unsettling sound. The uncomfortable feelings of the first paragraph, along with the unnatural and uncomfortable falling of Mrs. Hax from the basement window, are drastically contrasted against the natural, peaceful description of Bethge’s dream. The “perfect, graceful dance” performed by the bear caused him “great peace rather than alarm”. The two paragraphs that describe his dream are completely peaceful, and then the following paragraphs seem to shift “from dream to the sharp, troubling present”. The paragraph which begins with “He tried” sets a weirdly relaxed mood despite the tension of the situation. It almost reflects the “perfect, graceful dance, performed without a hint of the foppishness or studied concentration that mars the dance of humans” that was performed by the bear in his dream. There are no harsh word used in this paragraph other than the word “striking”, but there was no blood gushing or limbs snapping, his mouth only “filled with something warm and salty”. The blood was “singing in his veins”.…

While reading this poem I had to reread several lines over and over again simply because I liked them so much. A few lines that stood out to me were, “The skeleton of a calf's been wrapped around a pipe”, “A yolk slides down the drain”, and “You drive into the Wyoming part of you where it's obvious there have been some sacrifices” – all of these lines throughout this poem are vivid and give off a sense of loss. A dead baby animal represents something nipped in the bud, a yolk sliding down a drain is a fast and hopeless loss that can’t be recovered (without being messy anyway), and seeing sacrifices on a drive represents the loss of something important during the course of life. All of the images throughout this poem pulled on my heartstrings and were pieced together into a relatable format with pictures of food, animals, and rustic imagery, i.e. a plastic jug of milk, an egg yolk, flamingos, white dogs, horses, Wyoming, missile silos, tornados, bottoms of lakes, etc. And my favorite part of this poem that really caught me off guard, sealed the deal, and made me want to write this response, was the way the poem ended. The lines, “Everyone who ever knew you gently roams the town at the bottom of a lake - They flash to the surface,…

My favorite thing that we read was Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take The Garbage Out. I also chose this poem because Shel Silverstein is by far my favorite poet. I love Shel Silverstein's poems because they are funny and they always have a secret message or life lesson. I liked this poem because it was funny and makes you think about the trouble you get when you don't do your chores or do what you are told. This poem also makes you think about what might happen when you don't do your chores. This poem teaches kids that responsibility will make their lives easier and better in the future.…

I found this poem to be very emotionally moving because it tells of our story as African Americans in this country. The mother begins by telling her son that life for her aint been no crystal stair, it has had tacks in it, splinters, boards torn up, places where there haven’t been any carpet and bare. The beginning stanza of the poem serves as a reminder of the plight of African Americans here in America. Life for us has truly not been a crystal stair, we have certainly experienced a great deal or hardship as a people from the first time our feet touched these shores. This poem speaks of us being stolen from our homeland, and being sold into slavery. It speaks of us being placed in cages on the beach, as we awaited the slave ships to come and whisk us away from to uncertainty. It tells of the horror that we faced in the cage, and the fact that the cage still has the odor from us being packed in there like sardines to this very day.…

My favorite poems are jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll and Knoxville Tennessee by Nikki Giovanni. I like those poems the most because they are both different. Knoxville Tennessee is about the great things that summer can bring, like the things you love to do in the summer and the things you like to eat in the summer. I like jabberwocky also because it is fiction and not real story. In the poem jabberwocky in think these nonsense words make this poem special and it is a really exciting poem. But I think you can learn something from that poem, and that is you can be afraid of something but you can always do it when you believe in yourself and when you are not afraid anymore but in this poem he killed the jabberwocky and came home and now maybe he is the hero. And when you can do something you are afraid of when you can be a little hero because you are not afraid anymore. I think poems are sometimes better than books because you can read long poems and short poems but you can learn from both, but in one thing books and poems are equal they both tell a story even when it is a story that is not real they tell a story.…

At birth, before the umbilical cord is severed, the father may touch the baby's lips with a gold spoon or ring dipped in honey, curds, and ghee. The word vak (speech) is whispered three times into the right ear, and mantras are chanted to ensure a long life.
