Analysis Of A Political Cartoon 'The Wink'
Bohan Fan The wink Cartoonist Glenn McCoy published a political cartoon about one of the presidential candidates Hillary Clinton on September 10th 2015. The cartoon focuses on a recent incident of Mrs. Clinton. She not only uses a personal email account and sever when she was the secretary of the state , but also deleted some of the e-mails which she consider “personal” before hand them in to the state department for investigation. First of all, the cartoon is like a portrait of Hillary Clinton, her face is too big for the size of the picture, this shows that this person is everything the cartoon is about, she is the cause of the incident, the central of the problem, the aim of this cartoon, she is the key factor. Audiences can’t even see her forehead and hair completely, it appears that Hillary is trying to block the viewer’s sight if you take the cartoon as a camera shot, this symbolizes that Hillary is trying to use the apologize to move the sight of people away from the darkness behind her and stop public to explore what is behind her. The two things audiences can recognize from the first sights are the “sorry”, and the wink. The sorry in the speak bubble symbolizes Hilary’s apology which is not considered sincere by many people, and only “sorry” is a little less from people’s expectation, shows that although Hillary didn’t really just say “sorry” in her apology, but what she did is not enough, and this becomes the reason people question her conscientiousness. The wink symbolizes Hillary’s mental activity, it is common sense that if you say something but wink at the same time, you don’t mean it. Many people didn’t know about the whole e-mail incident before they saw this cartoon, therefore they may look up some information on the internet. If it wasn’t for this cartoon, people from other countries or people who don’t care about politics probably don’t have a chance to know anything about Hillary. After reviewing the event, people can get their own opinions and ideas, and get involved in the discussion. As a reader, I get the some ideas from this cartoon, which Hillary is not really sorry for what she did, and she might only be sorry for she got caught this time and try to let everyone forget about this as soon as possible. It is not the case that everyone has the right to review all the emails to find out what she is hiding, but some government department should have the right to view all of them, because those e-mail includes government business, a country cannot define some email as “personal” email before investigation just because the owner says it’s “boring” and she thinks the government don’t need to see them so she deletes them. It just makes no sense, we can’t say for sure that Hillary is hiding something from the public, but we also know that it’s not just she uses all caps in those emails or put everything in the subject blank.
