The imagery in “Cousin Kate” conveys how the love between the lord and the poor maiden was only temporary. “He wore me like a golden knot, He changed me like a glove”. The clothing imagery illustrates that the women meant hardly anything to the man. She was just disposable, like an inanimate object. “A golden knot” portrays how the maiden was trapped in the relationship with the lord but it also refers to the temporary nature of their relationship. Knots can be easily untied.…
People often dream of finding the perfect soul mate…a special someone with similar hopes and goals for their future. They dream of someone to share the good and bad times with them. They dream of a person that will love them unconditionally until death parts them. And although I seriously doubt anyone has ever said the sacred marriage vows to another while believing the union would not last forever, the high divorce rate shows that more and more, marriages are failing and separation is highly probable. It’s not clear why some marriages are successful and why some fail, but after reading the two poems, “Most Like an Arch This Marriage” and “Conjoined”, it’s crystal clear to me that marriage can indeed be either dream come true, or a living nightmare. In fact, it’s also quite possible for one partner to be happy in a marriage and the other one to be completely miserable. In this analysis, I plan on comparing the two poems, their similarities as well as their differences and how the poets used various writing techniques to illustrate their ideas on the marriage theme they have written about.…
One way in which the poets present their ideas about the pain of love is through their use of imagery with their poems. For example, they both use metaphors about being ‘wounded’. Fenton’s line ‘I’m one of your talking wounded’ adopts a pun which relates to the expression ‘walking wounded’, used by soldiers to imply resilience. He feels as though love has previously ‘wounded’ him, if not actually finished him off. Similarly, continuing with the theme of violence, Duffy uses an extended metaphor throughout the whole poem which presents the break-up of her relationship as a gunfight in a Western movie. Lexis such as ‘trigger’, ‘silver bullets’, ‘wide of the mark’ and ‘blast me’ presents the effect of breaking up as wounding her physically.…
Philip Larkin and Dannie Abse have very different and contrating attitudes to relationships. On the whole, Larkin presents the concepts of love and marriage as very superficial and meaningless, whereas Abse appears to be less such nihilistic and more open and positive about such topics. The essay will discuss this contrast by examing Larkin’s “Whitsun Weddings”, “Wild Oats” and “Arundel Tomb”, and Dannie Abse’s “Imitations” and “Sons”.…
It is obvious that everyone is so anticipated that even the nature itself is waiting breathlessly – “the fireflies waited in the shadows”. Human interference with nature is the main idea of this piece of writing. It is obvious that “the pencil line across the sun” is an unnatural event and it shouldn’t be there. It is an example of a simile comparing two important sources of light – the sun and electricity. The repetition of the verb “closing” in the end of the second stanza shows, that although exiting, new things are always frightening, especially in the Third…
Gail Godwin’s “A Sorrowful Woman” is to some extent an attack on marriage and gender roles. She allows us to view the social lie that comes with this commitment and in doing so I believe that Godwin is allowing her audience to see marriage from an entire different perspective. She is allowing us to see the reality of what the epigraph at the beginning of the story reads, Once Upon a time which always implies that it is a fairy tale with a happy ending.…
The language of the poem uses traditional Arabic references, such as 'the barbarian sun'; a negative metaphor. This is suggesting that the sun is naturally big and hot, which is compared with Barbarians who make unnatural conflict and strengthen the war.…

The structure of the poem is another way the poet presents his feelings about marriage. The sentence length in the first stanza suggests that it is quite a long and methodical process leading up to finding a partner for marriage, “but then”, in the second stanza; once it occurs its a lot easier and is almost sets you free. The structure also shows the contrast between pre marital life with the difficulties of living alone and benefits and pleasure of sharing your life with someone, this is done by breaking up the stanzas, with short phrases such as…
It illustrates the power of the quilt to connect the speaker to other lives in her family. As previously noted, the yellow, white, and brown shades on the quilt resembles the colors of the skin tones of her family. Therefore, the quilt is an active representation of the people in her family that the speaker identifies with and is a part of. The gestures of “caressing” by the imaginary fingers of the colors of the quilt represent the intimacy and trust that the blanket evokes. It suggests that the speaker’s heritage is deeply close to her. This gentle motion of stroking that the speaker hopes will ease her transition into death “into the silence,” along with the wish that she would like to die under the quilt may symbolize the intentions of living for and taking the values of her culture and history with her in…
The poem is about a person who fell in love. They were surprised by this, because it was a whirlwind romance and unexpected. The author is surprised by the love and also a little afraid by it. The writer uses metaphors and analysis to set out the scene. There is a sexual theme throughout the poem. After sex they embraced and held each other, then when the subject wakes up they feel the joy of it.…
“Belfast Confetti” and “Yellow Palm” are both majorly set around the imagery language used, and the effects of the devastation happening to the communities. Both poems are similarly themed; “Belfast Confetti” depicts the aftermath of a bomb during the troubles that people in Belfast experienced. The poem “Yellow Palm” follows a similar theme, portraying the problems which are present in Baghdad.…
‘Drifters’ is a poem about one woman’s refusal to abandon hope, in spite of overwhelming hardship. The family has to move from place to place, as the father needs to move by the demand of his job. Despite Dawe’s use of causal language, if you read carefully you would be able to see the seriousness of what he is saying.…
