Analyse two spontaneous texts
The aim of this essay is to analyse two different transcripts which are focused on a contestant from the popular show, X-Factor, Rylan. Both of these transcripts are examples of spontaneous speech with transactional purposes. Whilst the first transcript deals with Rylan’s first audition, the second transcript portrays the results show which is much tenser than his first audition as they are deciding Rylan’s future in X-Factor. This essay will discuss the way Rylan, The judges and in the second transcript, Dermot O’Leary’s speech affected by context, audience and purpose.
In Rylan’s first broadcast audition, Rylan is relentlessly trying to cajole the judges with his inimitable persona. He has acknowledged that in order to progress in the competition; he needs to make an impression on the judges. Rylan quickly introduces Gary as he is typically assumed as the difficult judge. Rylan compliments Gary by saying “I gotta say that blazer…is love!”. The positive attitude which is put forward about the blazer and Gary’s style is hoped to be mirrored in the way the judges view him. Gary’s mock confirmation, that he has a “yes from me” reflects that Gary has understood Rylan’s purpose to flatter him; therefore a light hearted mood is created and Rylan quickly builds a connection with Gary. The Ellison of the word ‘gotta’ in Rylan’s description of Gary’s blazer as ‘love, is also significant here; the noun ‘love’ is employed as an adjective which is unusual. The purpose of the unconventional use of this term is to implicitly communicate that Rylan’s original personality and will bring a new perspective to the show. It could be said that the repetition of compliments dedicate to Gary’s blazer and Rylan’s unconventional yet creative use of language, immediately lets himself be identified as someone unique and likeable; thus , Rylan creates a positive image of himself in the audition.

    Have you ever spoken to your friend, and stopped for one second to consider not only what he is saying, but also how he is saying it? The language, the structure and what this tells us about his voice. One can argue that the ‘voice’ is incredibly important. It is the ‘voice’ that enables Human beings to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas orally to one another. Universally, we find there is a distinct importance on this idea, as despite the circumstance, the ‘voice’ provides us with important insights into the individuals and the messages they are conveying. However, in particular it is the language that individuals utilise at their exposure, which creates the power in their voice. For instance, we find that simple things such as the use of formal language juxtaposed to colloquial language, emotive language compared to rigid and objective language, all play a part in the representation of the ‘voice’. The film ‘The Castle’ and the song ‘You are the voice’ by John Fernham in particular, give us clear insights into not only the notion of voice, and how language influences ones voice, but rather Australian voices in particular. Throughout these texts, the power of language is used to represent ideas about the differences between the ‘authority’ and the ‘underdogs’ and their power and powerlessness respectively. By association, we find that the Australian voice is then further revealed through the exploration of language, as we see notions of justice, mateship and the Aussie battling mentality – central aspects of Australian culture and the Australian voice.…
