1. Setting: NYC/Manhattan/September, 1986 Labor Day Weekend
Book continues to the present day.
Main Characters: Laura and Maurice
2. First person narrative
3. Maurice’s background: poor, drug ridden, violent, unstable
4. Laura’s background: abusive, but hidden from sight; middle class and suburban
5. Maurice is on the street asking for money, he asks Laura for money for food b/c he is hungry. She passes him at first, but then goes back and they go to McDonalds for lunch. They then meet for the next 150 Mondays.
6. Maurice’s teacher had tried to help him and had gone to his apartment to try to get his family involved in his school work. She told Laura that if she wanted to help Maurice she needed to get involved and stay involved; she could never abandon him. Laura never forgot what Miss House said.
7. “Junebug” was Maurice’s father’s nickname.
8. Foreshadowing: a hint of what is to come in a story. Laura had brought coffee to a homeless man named Stan until he disappeared. This tells us that Laura is more likely to get involved than other people.
9. The name of the gang was the Tomahawk gang.
10. Laura’s mother, Marie, was raised in an abusive household too. Her father was very strict and even cruel, so when she was 19 she married a man who she thought would protect her to get out of her father’s house and away from the abuse. However, her husband turned out to be just as abusive as her father was. This is an example of irony.
11. Laura’s 50th birthday party was a great occasion for her because Maurice and all of his family, as well as her brothers and sisters and their families were there.
12. Explain this in a two paragraph response, one paragraph for Maurice and one for Laura. Each paragraph in your response should be at least 7-9 sentences. You will write the answer to this question on the test. You may NOT write it before and then hand it in.

Foreshadowing is when the author gives a hint or warning to something that is going to happen. Foreshadowing holds the reader's interest because they try to use these clues to figure out what happens next. “An abrupt sound startled him. Off to the right he heard it, and his ears, expert in such matters could not be mistaken. Again he heard the sound, and again. Somewhere, off in the blackness, someone had fired a gun three times” (69). This passage is foreshadowing because the sound did not sound like an animal. Rainsford would later figure out that the sound was a human.…

The third example of irony is how Ann comes to realize how John was the only man for her. It took her having sex with Steven for her to grasp it was John she loved not Steven. This is ironic for the reason that in the beginning of this short story Ann kept complaining about John's looks and way of doing things, and complimenting on how different Steven not only looked but acted. With time it turns out that in the conclusion Ann is not able to be with John because of her decision to sleep with Steven.…

For example, the title indicates that the dream will die. “The best laid schemes of mice and men go often askew” (Doc A). The title of the book was taken from this line. It is hinting that their farm dream will die when it says that plans of mice and men go often askew. Also when Curley’s wife dies; it is foreshadowing for the farm dream dying. After killing her, Lennie says, “I done another bad thing” (Doc B). Lennie is realising that he just killed her, that the other guys are going to want to kill him, so he has to run away killing the farm dream. The foreshadowing in the book tells the readers that the farm dream will…

In the poem “To a Mouse” there is a quote that read ”The best laid schemes often go askew” and this can easily describe how John Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to show that something is going to go wrong. In Of Mice and Men Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to get the reader hint that bad things are going to happen. In the very first paragraph of the novella he gives us hints that Lennie is going to end up getting in trouble by having George say “Well, look. Lennie--if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always do before, I want you to come right back here an’ hide in a bush”. John Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to show that George is going to kill lennie, Curley’s wife is going to die, and that George and Lennie are not going to accomplish…

In this story, foreshadowing shows that things will not turn out well. “Hark at the wind,” said Mr. White, who having seen a fatal mistake after it was too late, was amiably desirous of preventing his son from seeing it. Since the last time I journaled, I have started reading the book An Invisible Thread by Laura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski and am currently on page 137. This book is a true story written from Laura’s point of view about the relationship that formed between her and Maurice. They met while Laura was walking to work one morning; Maurice was a homeless, eleven year old panhandler who asked her for money one day. Instead of giving him money, Laura decided to take him out to lunch. They continued to meet every week after this and ended up becoming great friends. While reading this book, I have been observing the major conflicts, Maurice’s life at home, Laura’s childhood, and the relationship between Maurice and Laura.…

If the owners of Threadless decide to accept offers to sell its T-shirts at large retailers such as Target, we believe that it will end up hurting the business in the end. Threadless is successful as a business because of its strong community of 500,000 members worldwide who vote, critique, and interact with others. If Threadless sold large quantities of T-shirts to a retailer such as Target, the essence of what Threadless is as a business is lost. If Threadless’ shirts were sold in Target, they would just be another shirt on the wall. Customers would have no idea where the shirt came from or who designed it. The brand’s personality is lost because the communication between artists and customers, voting on t-shirts, the humor of the website, and the overall community Threadless is so famous and successful for is gone.…
