    The Annunciation Analysis

Many of the objects depicted in High Renaissance paintings were there for a reason. In “The Annunciation,” Mary is the largest figure and the main focus. She is shown facing front, with her head tilted toward the floor and her eyes almost closed. In her left hand she is holding the Bible, representing her devoutness to God, her right hand is raised, all fingers pointing up. Archangel Gabriel is on the left side of the panel, shown smaller and wearing the ornate vestments of a priest. His clothes symbolize the similarity between him and the clergy of the Church: they both share the word of God. They are both wearing very loose fitting clothing that have many folds. The Holy Trinity is represented here by God, baby Jesus carrying his cross, and a dove, often a symbol of the Holy Spirit. They are all connected by seven rays of light, flowing directly from God’s mouth onto Mary. The seven rays represent the seven days it took God to create the universe. Gold is used as a symbol to represent divinity (Smith). White lilies in a vase between angel Gabriel and Mary often symbolized Mary’s purity. Written on the vase is “Ave Regina,” representing the Hail Mary prayer. The Latin words written in gold are archangel Gabriel telling Mary, “‘Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus’” (Luke 1:31). Symbolism can also be found in the frame of the painting. The three arches at the…

Mary Shelley paints a picture into her reader’s minds. She uses descriptive words that create images. She describes the scenery seen through the eyes of her character. Shelley writes “Soon a gentle light stole over the heavens and gave me a sensation of pleasure. I started up and beheld a radiant rise from among the trees.” (91). In this part of the text, I believe that the author is describing a sunrise. She talks about the “gentle light over the heavens”, when she says “heavens” she is referring to the sky and the the light that stole over the heavens is the sun rising from it’s rest. As he is walking and starting up he sees that the sun is shedding its light amongst the various trees in his eyesight. Mary Shelley gives the reader an image within their minds due to her superb ability to create imagery that makes you feel as if you can see everything exactly as she describes it.…

These are two things in nature that are opposite to each other but are interconnected at the same time because without night we would not have day and the other way around. The Sun and Moon symbolize the spiritual realm of God. In the poem, the Sun is a representation on the reprimanding and disciplinary side of God. After the ancient Mariner had shot the Albatross, with the Sun comes consequences for his action as the wind starts to die down and the ship begins to stop moving, which is what all the shipmates dread. “Down dropt the breeze, the sails dropt down, 'Twas sad as sad could be; And we did speak only to break The silence of the sea! All in a hot and copper sky The bloody Sun, at noon,” (Coleridge 107-112). Contrasting the Sun, in the poem, the Moon represents the merciful, compassionate side of God. The Moon seems to bring on the departure of the curse of the Albatross from the ancient Mariner. The moon brings calm, and the Albatross falling from the Mariner’s neck into the sea symbolizes the removal of this curse. This glorious even for the Mariner is demonstrated in the lines, “The moving Moon went up the sky,” (Coleridge 264)… “The selfsame moment I could pray; And from my neck so free The Albatross fell off, and sank Like lead into the sea, ” (Coleridge 289-292). Whether God is acting in a generous or scolding manner, either way, the idea is that God has overall power. It…

Throughout history, art and ideas always change and different movement always transit from one to another. The time period, politics, religion, propaganda and place are what the art reflect. From 16th to 19th century, the art style that followed after the Renaissance and mannerism was the Baroque era. The baroque style was very distinguish and different from the previous era.
